What to buy first

One bottle for water and one mug for coffee, from brands that sell the lid separately. The steel body of an 18/8 vacuum-insulated tumbler does not wear out; the lid, the gasket and the straw do, usually inside two years. The 40 oz handle tumbler is the category Stanley's Quencher created, and its 3.1-inch base is the reason it fits a cup holder; every 40 oz that followed copies the taper. A 30 oz is the size that fits every holder without thinking about it and weighs a third less full. What decides the price

Almost nothing in the steel. An 18/8 double-wall vacuum body costs the same to make whether it says YETI or Simple Modern, which is why a Simple Modern Trek 40 is $28 and a Stanley ProTour 40 is $45 and a YETI Rambler 30 is $38. What you pay for is the lid engineering (a genuinely leakproof flip straw with a replaceable seal is worth money), the warranty term, and the parts catalog. The mistake buyers make

Buying on ice hours and discovering the warranty. RTIC's drinkware is well made and ceramic-lined, and RTIC gives it 90 days. Igloo gives its tumblers 90 days. Hydro Flask's and Purist's terms could not be read on a fetchable page, so they are marked unverified here. Against that, Stanley, Owala, Simple Modern, BrüMate and Klean Kanteen print lifetime terms on the steel, and YETI and Zojirushi print 5 years.
