Three lids, one that seals
The 40 oz handle tumbler is a Stanley invention and the lid is where the copies differ. Stanley's FlowState lid rotates between a straw opening, a wide mouth and a full cover; it is splash-resistant, not leakproof, and Stanley does not call it leakproof. Stanley's ProTour lid is a flip straw that Stanley calls “Leakproof ProTour Flip Straw lid, removable spout, replaceable seal,” and Treeline named it best with a straw. Simple Modern's Trek has a “leak-proof dual-function lid” by Simple Modern's description. RTIC's Road Trip has a “leak-resistant closure,” which is a different word on purpose. Hydro Flask's 40 oz has a standard lid and no leak claim on the page we could read. If the tumbler rides in a bag, the ProTour and the Trek are the two on this page whose makers say it will stay shut.

Four pounds
On warranty, this is the category where Stanley's fine print matters most. Its lifetime term covers “degradation of thermal performance” on the stainless vacuum body and states that “this warranty does not apply to any non-stainless-steel part,” with lids, seals and straws named. Stanley sells those in its Lids collection. Simple Modern's lifetime term says the opposite: “Broken lids and drinkware that has lost its insulating properties are covered.” RTIC gives drinkware 90 days. Hydro Flask's page could not be read. The tumbler warranty comparison has each in full; tumbler lid replacement covers the lids, which on a 40 oz is the part that cracks.

Leakproof or not, decide first
Bag: ProTour or Trek. Desk and cup holder: any of them.
Cold only
Stanley says no hot liquids in the ProTour and IceFlow; RTIC says the lid and straw are not for hot drinks. A 40 oz straw tumbler is an ice-water tool.
Buy the second lid now
The straw and the seal are the wear items and, for Stanley, the uncovered ones. Stanley's Lids collection; Simple Modern's accessories.
Measure the cup holder
3.1 inches at the base is Stanley's number. Trucks are fine; some sedans are not.
