The weight you carry for cold water

A 32 oz insulated bottle weighs about a pound empty and three pounds full. A 32 oz plastic bottle weighs 5 oz empty. That 11 oz of steel and vacuum is the entire trade of this page, and it is worth making consciously: on a two-hour walk in April it buys you nothing, and on a seven-mile ridge in August it is the difference between water you want to drink and water you force down.

Two consequences follow. First, size down rather than up — 26 oz of cold water you will drink beats 40 oz of cold water you carry home. Second, the insulation claim matters less than the cap and the mouth, because every bottle here claims about 24 hours cold and none of them will be in the sun for 24 hours. Klean Kanteen is the outlier at a claimed 66 hours iced, and it is also the heaviest-walled bottle in the group.

The cap is the failure

The second cap question is whether it stays shut in a pack. Owala's carry loop doubles as a lock, and Owala describes the lid as leak-proof; RTIC's flip top is described as leak-proof; Klean Kanteen's Chug and Twist caps are cold-only screw caps and seal properly. Straw lids of any kind are the ones to distrust in a pack, and they are covered on their own page for that reason.

Mouth size, filters and ice

A wide mouth does three things on a trail: it takes ice cubes, it takes a squeeze filter or a gravity bag's outlet, and it can be cleaned in the field. Hydro Flask's Wide Mouth and Klean Kanteen's TKWide (the “TK” is the wide 2.2-inch body) are both built around this; a narrow sport spout is convenient to drink from and impossible to fill from a stream.

One warning for insulated bottles on the trail: never put a carbonated drink or a hot electrolyte mix in a sealed bottle. Owala rules out hot, carbonated and perishable liquids in the FreeSip in writing, and Stanley's FAQ warns against carbonation in any sealed container. The carbonation page collects the maker statements. If you carry coffee as well as water, a dedicated hot vessel is the right answer, because a cold-only cap is not designed to vent steam.

Buy the size you will drink, not the size you can carry

26 to 32 oz covers most day hikes with a refill. Above that, the steel is dead weight you will resent by mile four.

Wide mouth if you filter or use ice

A 2.2-inch opening takes a filter, a scoop of ice and a bottle brush. A sport spout takes none of them.

Check the cap locks

In a pack, a leaking cap ruins a down jacket. Locking loops (Owala) and screw caps (Klean Kanteen, YETI) are the safe choices; loose straw lids are not.

Buy a brand that sells gaskets

Gaskets perish in a year of sun. Klean Kanteen sells kits; YETI sells caps; RTIC sells neither and covers drinkware for 90 days. Every term, quoted.

Pre-chill it, and fill it full

Insulated bottles hold cold, they do not make it. A bottle filled with cold water and a few cubes at 6am is still cold at 4pm; a warm bottle filled with warm water never recovers.
