What a straw lid is for

A straw changes how much you drink. You do not tip the bottle, so you can drink at a desk, in a car, on a bike or mid-set without breaking what you are doing, and most people finish more water as a result. The cost is mechanical: a straw lid adds a tube, a bite valve or spout, and a second gasket — three more parts to clean, clog or lose, none of which is covered by most of the lifetime warranties on this page.

Which ones actually seal

The practical rule: a straw lid seals only when the straw is covered by something — a flip cap, a closed nozzle, a locking loop. An open straw hole is an open bottle, however good the vacuum underneath it is. If the bottle rides in a bag with a laptop, buy one of the three with an explicit closed position and test it over a sink before you trust it.

The rules every maker prints

Three restrictions come up on nearly every straw bottle page, and they are worth reading before you buy. Look for a closed position, not a “leak-resistant” one

A flip cover, a nozzle that shuts or a locking loop. Anything else will empty itself into a rucksack eventually.

Check the base against your cup holder

Simple Modern says its 14-30 oz Summits fit most holders and its 32 oz and larger do not. A bottle that lives in a car should be 30 oz or under.

Buy the brand that sells the straw
