The best insulated water bottles for kids: the straw you can replace, and the warranty that outlives the school year

What actually matters

Every bottle here is double-walled stainless steel and every one will keep water cold through a school day. The steel is not the variable. The variables are the parts that a seven-year-old destroys — the straw, the gasket, the lid hinge — and whether the brand sells them. A $26 bottle you re-straw twice is cheaper than a $17 bottle you replace three times, and that is the entire argument of this page.

The second variable is the published number. Only two makers here publish a cold figure at all: Klean Kanteen (40 hours iced) and Owala (24 hours cold). YETI publishes none for the Rambler Jr., and Thermos publishes none on the FUNtainer product pages we read. That does not make them bad bottles; it means the comparison has to be made on construction and paperwork, and we say so rather than inventing hours.

Hours, parts and terms

The straw is the consumable

Silicone straws get chewed flat, stain with juice and split at the base. Klean Kanteen ships a removable stainless straw, which is the one design here that a child cannot bite through, and it sells caps and gasket kits as separate items. Owala sells replacement straws. YETI sells Rambler straw caps. Thermos lists replacement straws for some FUNtainer sizes, though we could not confirm this size on a page we read.

The other consumable is the gasket, and it is the one parents miss. A bottle that starts leaking after a year has usually lost the seal, not the vacuum, and a $6 gasket kit fixes it. Ages, hot drinks and soda

Three things every maker here states, and every parent should know. Ages 3 and up: Klean Kanteen notes the cap is not intended for children under 3, Owala lists the Kids' FreeSip as 3+, and L.L.Bean lists the Rambler Jr. as 3+. No carbonation: Owala's FAQ rules out hot, carbonated and perishable liquids in the Kids' FreeSip, and the YETI Rambler Jr. straw cap “cannot be used with hot, carbonated or pulpy drinks.” No hot drinks through a straw: Owala warns that a straw draws liquid from the bottom of the bottle, where hot liquid is hottest — a genuine scald risk with a child.

Buyer's guide: the kids' bottle

Size it to the backpack pocket, not the thirst

12 to 16 oz fits an elementary backpack side pocket and refills at the fountain. An 18 oz bottle that will not fit the pocket rides in the bag on its side, and then the lid gets tested.

Buy the brand that sells the straw

Straws are a consumable. Klean Kanteen's is steel and removable; Owala, YETI and Thermos sell replacements for at least some models.

Look for a lock, not just a lid

Owala's hinged carry loop doubles as a lock, which is what keeps a bottle shut inside a bag full of homework.

Hand wash the painted ones

Klean Kanteen recommends hand washing painted and insulated bottles; most lids are top-rack only. Dishwashers are what fade the character prints your child chose the bottle for.

Then read the term before you buy the cheapest

Two bottles here have lifetime terms and two have five years. That is the reason to buy a brand at all in a category full of $9 bottles. Every term, quoted.
