How long a cooler really holds ice, and how to get more out of it

What to read first

The cooler ice retention chart. It is the one page nobody else publishes: every measured ice-retention result we could find for a cooler sold on Amazon, in one table, with the test that produced it, the protocol it used, and the date. OutdoorGearLab's controlled room, Outdoor Life's one-third-ice backyard, Outside Lab's 96-hour dark box, Gear Patrol's 72-hour patio: different protocols, different numbers, all attributed. If you want to know how long a specific cooler holds ice, that table is the answer, and the answer is usually about half of what the box says.

How the tests work, and why they disagree

Two thresholds do the work: 40°F, the food-safe line, and 50°F, the drinkable line. OutdoorGearLab and CleverHiker log hours to each with sensors; Outdoor Life times a one-third ice load to melt-out; Outside ran both a lab and a backyard test and got different winners. The variables are the ice-to-air ratio, pre-chilling, ambient temperature and how often the lid opens. That is why Gear Patrol found the Tundra 45 and RTIC 45 within 2.4°F at 72 hours while Outside Lab found the RTIC fully melted at 96 hours and the Tundra Haul still holding. The half you control

A cooler's foam is fixed; everything else is yours. Pre-chill it overnight with sacrificial ice (how to pre-chill a cooler). Fill it: a 65-quart box a third full of ice holds worse than a 45 packed tight, because air melts ice. Use block ice or frozen bottles at the bottom and cubes on top. Dry ice, ice packs, and what not to do

Dry ice works in a rotomolded cooler rated for it (OutdoorGearLab lists the Tundra Haul as dry-ice compatible; Engel says its High Performance coolers are) and destroys a soft cooler (AO Coolers says it can crack the liner). It also needs ventilation: never seal it airtight. Dry ice in a cooler covers the safety and the math. Ice packs supplement ice rather than replace it; in Outdoor Life's June 2025 test every pack warmed past 28°F within four hours on a counter.
