Same steel
Stanley, YETI, Klean Kanteen, Owala, Simple Modern, RTIC, Hydro Flask and Zojirushi all build 18/8 stainless steel double-wall vacuum vessels. The vacuum is the insulation; the steel is the shell. What differs between a $22 Simple Modern and a $45 Stanley is the lid engineering, the warranty term, and the name, which is why drinkware brands ranked is mostly a table of terms and lids. This page is about the other variable: the shape, which is really the mouth and the lid.
The four shapes
Tumbler. A wide mouth, a straight or tapered body sized for a cup holder, and a lid that slides (YETI MagSlider), rotates (Stanley FlowState) or flips a straw (Stanley IceFlow, ProTour). Built for drinking, not carrying; most lids are not leakproof, and the ones that are (ProTour, IceFlow, Simple Modern Trek) say so. Takes ice easily. Stanley's straw tumblers are cold-only by instruction. Water bottle. A narrower body, a screw cap or a locking spout (Owala FreeSip, Klean Kanteen Chug, YETI Chug Cap). Seals. Wide-mouth versions take ice. Holds cold longest because the lid is a solid cap over an insulated neck: Klean Kanteen claims 66 hours iced; Owala, Hydro Flask and RTIC claim 24. Many are cold-only (Owala; Klean Kanteen's Chug and Twist caps). Thermos. A bottle with a stopper and often a cup, built for hot liquids: Zojirushi's Stainless Mug publishes 158°F at six hours from a 203°F fill, and Thermos gives its stainless vacuumware 5 years. Narrow mouths; poor for ice. Travel mug. A short thermos with a drinking lid and often a handle: YETI's ceramic-lined Rambler mug, Zojirushi's locking flip-lid mug. For coffee at a desk or in a cup holder.

Tumbler vs thermos: what's the difference?
A thermos is built for hot liquids with a sealed stopper and a narrow mouth; a tumbler is built for cold with a wide mouth and a drinking lid. Zojirushi publishes 158°F at 6 hours; Stanley says its straw tumblers are not for hot liquids at all.
Tumbler vs mug?
A travel mug is a short thermos with a drinking lid and usually a handle, for coffee; a tumbler is taller, wider-mouthed and for ice. YETI's Rambler line has both.
Which keeps drinks cold longer, a tumbler or a bottle?
