The best tumblers for hot and cold drinks: the ones whose makers publish both numbers
Most popular tumblers are cold-only, and the maker says so in small print. This page keeps only the cups with a published hot figure as well as a cold one, and names the lid you need for each.

The rule for this page
“Hot and cold” is the normal way people describe insulated drinkware and it is wrong about most of it. A vacuum-insulated steel cup is indifferent to which direction heat is travelling; the lid is not. A flip-straw lid has a narrow straw path, a silicone seal and a spring mechanism, and the makers that build them say plainly not to put hot liquid through one. Stanley says its IceFlow is “not for use with hot liquids”. Simple Modern says the Summit straw lid is “not recommended for hot or carbonated beverages”. Owala says its FreeSip bottle is “not for use with hot, carbonated, or perishable liquids”.
So two conditions got a cup onto this page. One: the maker publishes a hot figure as well as a cold one, or states in writing that the cup is for hot drinks too. Two: there is a lid for it that is rated for a hot fill, whether that is an open slider, a drink-through lid or a flip lid sold as an accessory. Everything else on the site belongs on best tumblers for cold drinks or best tumblers for coffee.
The five, side by side
The lid, not the cup, decides it
Three lid types work with a hot fill, and each has a cost.
An open slider or drink-through lid — the YETI MagSlider, Stanley's press-fit Tritan camp-mug lid — will take anything you pour in it and will not leak only because it is not sealed. YETI is explicit that the MagSlider is “not leakproof and should not be stored inside a backpack”. This is a desk-and-cup-holder lid.
A sealed flip or push-button lid — the Trek flip lid, Simple Modern's 360° Voyager lid, BrüMate's BevLock — is the one you want if the cup travels, and it is also the part most likely to fail. Check it is sold separately before you buy the cup: Simple Modern sells Trek flip lids and Classic lids individually and in three-packs, which is why both score well on the lid-availability metric.
A straw lid is cold-only. If the cup you want ships with one — the Trek 40 and the Classic 24 both do — budget for the flip lid as well and treat the straw lid as the summer configuration. Tumbler lid replacement lists what each brand actually ships, and how to clean a tumbler lid and straw matters more when the same cup carries coffee and then water.
Popular cups that did not qualify, and why
The Stanley Quencher H2.0 40 oz publishes “stays cold for 11 hrs” and “cold with ice for 2 days” and is described for cold drinks only — it is the best 40 oz on this site and it is not a hot cup. The Stanley IceFlow 30 is not for hot liquids at all. The Simple Modern Summit 30 oz bottle says not recommended for hot. Owala is the interesting borderline case: its own FAQ names the 40 oz and 24 oz Tumblers as holding “cold, carbonated, and hot drinks”, but publishes no hour figure for either, and its FreeSip bottles are explicitly cold-only. If you want one cup for coffee and soda, the Owala 24 oz Tumbler is a real answer — see best tumblers for carbonated drinks.
And if what you actually want is the longest hot figure in insulated drinkware rather than a dual-purpose cup, none of these is it: a Thermos Stainless King travel mug states hot up to 7 hours and cold up to 18, with a DrinkLock sealing lid and a handle. That cup lives on best coffee travel mugs with a handle.

Buyer's guide: one cup for both
Read the lid's restriction, not the cup's marketing
The steel body does not care. The lid does, and the maker will tell you in one line on the product page whether hot liquid is allowed through it.
Expect the hot figure to be a third of the cold one
Twelve hours hot against twenty-four cold is the normal shape of these claims, and it is physics: a 200°F fill is fighting a 130-degree gradient to room temperature, iced water is fighting about forty.
Buy the second lid up front
A straw lid for summer and a flip lid for coffee is two lids and one cup. Both Simple Modern cups here sell their lids individually.
Then wash it properly, every time the contents change
Coffee oils in a straw are what people mistake for a cup that stopped insulating. Why a tumbler stops keeping ice separates the two failures.
Compare against the single-purpose winners before you commit
Best insulated tumblers is the flagship ranking, and the cold-drinks ranking has the longer ice figures if that is all you need.
How we scored this
What we checked before picking
Every pick on this page is built from documents you can open yourself: the maker's published capacity, insulation, dimensions and weight; the warranty term quoted from the maker's own warranty page with the date we read it; the parts catalogue, to confirm the latches, gaskets, plugs, lids and straws can actually be bought; and the third-party ice-retention tests that measured these models (OutdoorGearLab, Outdoor Life, Treeline, Outside, Gear Patrol), credited to the publisher that ran them. Every figure links to where it came from, so you can check the pick before you buy it.
Scores are editorial judgments built from that documented research. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubric and its weights are published.
Corrections & updates
- First published from the registry's existing sourced specs; every hour figure is quoted as a maker claim and none is presented as a measurement.
Questions
Frequently asked
What is the best tumbler for hot and cold drinks?
The Simple Modern Trek 40: Simple Modern publishes “hot for 12 hrs, cold for 24 hrs”, its limited lifetime warranty explicitly covers broken lids and lost insulation, and it sells both a cold straw lid and a leakproof flip lid for the same cup.
Can you put hot coffee in any insulated tumbler?
In any vacuum-insulated steel body, yes. Through any lid, no. Stanley's IceFlow is “not for use with hot liquids”, Simple Modern's Summit straw lid is “not recommended for hot”, and Owala's FreeSip bottles are cold-only. Match the lid to the drink.
Do tumblers keep drinks hot as long as they keep them cold?
No, and the published claims show it: 12 hours hot against 24 cold for Simple Modern's Trek, 4 hours hot against 24 cold for BrüMate's Trio, 7 hours hot against 18 cold for a Thermos Stainless King. A hot drink is fighting a much bigger temperature gradient than an iced one.
Is a Stanley Quencher good for hot drinks?
It is sold for cold: Stanley publishes “stays cold for 11 hrs” and “cold with ice for 2 days” and the ProTour and IceFlow lids are stated as not for hot liquids. For a Stanley you can drink coffee from, the Stay-Hot Camp Mug publishes 2.5 hours hot with a drink-through lid.
Which lid should I use for coffee?
An open slider, a drink-through lid, or a sealed flip lid the maker rates for hot. Never a straw lid — the straw path and its seal are built for cold, and every maker here says so.
Where do these hour figures come from?
Each maker's own product page, quoted with the date we read it. No independent lab has measured any of these five, and we have not tested them.
