How to clean a tumbler lid, straw and gasket, and when to stop cleaning and replace the gasket

The steel never gets dirty in a way that matters. The lid does: the gasket channel, the straw, the slider track. The makers' own care lines, the dishwasher rules by brand, and the two parts you replace instead.

The routine

  1. Every day: rinse the lid under hot water, straw out, slider open. Coffee oil and sugar are what feed the smell.
  2. Every few days: disassemble. Pull the straw, pop the flip or slider if it comes off (Stanley's FlowState cover and ProTour spout do; YETI's MagSlider magnet lifts out), and work the gasket out of its channel with a fingernail or a plastic pick, never a knife.
  3. Wash the pieces in hot water and dish soap with a bottle brush for the body, a straw brush for the straw, and a soft toothbrush for the gasket channel, where the lid meets the threads.
  4. Or the top rack, disassembled, where the maker allows it. A gasket left in its channel in a dishwasher comes out clean on the outside and not on the inside.
  5. Dry apart. A gasket reseated wet is a gasket growing something.

Straws and sliders

Straws grow film inside faster than anything else on a tumbler. A straw brush (most makers ship one; Stanley's and Simple Modern's include reusable straws) every few days, and a hot soapy soak weekly. Stanley and Simple Modern sell replacement straws; RTIC ships two with the Road Trip. Sliders: YETI's MagSlider lifts off the lid for washing and its track collects grit; wipe the track dry before you reseat it or the magnet drags. Stanley's FlowState cover rotates off; wash the three positions' seal edge.

When to replace, not clean

A gasket that is cracked, hard, or permanently discolored. A straw that has split. A flip hinge that no longer snaps. A slider magnet that is lost. How do you clean mold out of a tumbler lid?

Disassemble, pull the gasket, soak the lid parts in warm water and baking soda for twenty minutes, scrub the gasket channel with a toothbrush, rinse and dry apart. If the gasket itself stays black or has cracked, replace it.

Can you put a Stanley lid in the dishwasher?

Yes; Stanley says the Quencher, IceFlow and ProTour are dishwasher safe. Simple Modern and RTIC say to disassemble first and use the top rack.

Can you put an Owala in the dishwasher?

The lid, yes; the cup, no. Owala's page: “Dishwasher-safe lid and hand-washable cup.”

How do you clean a tumbler straw?

A straw brush every few days and a hot soapy soak weekly. Replace it when it splits; Stanley and Simple Modern sell straws.

Why does my tumbler smell even after washing?

The gasket. Pull it out of the channel; the underside and the channel are where film grows. If it does not clean, replace it.
