What to buy first

Decide whether you need it to hold ice or to hold lunch, because the answer costs $70 or $325. Every soft cooler is a bag with foam and a liner, and every one fails at the same three places: the zipper, the seam, and the liner. What decides the price

The closure and the name. A welded, waterproof-zipper 30-can cooler is $129 from RTIC and $250–$300 from YETI; the measured difference in OutdoorGearLab's table runs the other way (RTIC Soft Pack 30 at 1.8 days, Hopper Flip 12 at 1.6). What YETI sells for the extra money is a 3-year term against RTIC's 1, and that is a real thing to buy on a product whose failure mode is a zipper. The mistake buyers make

Expecting hard-cooler hours from a soft cooler. The best soft cooler in OutdoorGearLab's 2026 table held ice for 3.6 days; the worst hard cooler in its other table held 2.4, and most rotomolded coolers held four to seven. The warranty is the whole argument

RTIC: 1 year on soft coolers and backpacks, 90 days on day coolers. Engel: 1 year on HD soft coolers and the BP25. YETI: 3 years on the Hopper line. Arctic Zone: a limited lifetime term on its soft goods. Igloo: 1 year. Make it last
