How these were ranked
The same rubric as the hard coolers: 30% ice retention as measured by a named test, 20% the warranty term quoted from the maker, 15% repairability, 15% capacity per dollar, 10% build and carry, 10% fit for the buy-once buyer. The measured source for eight of the nine is OutdoorGearLab's “Best Soft Cooler” table, updated September 15, 2026 (19 coolers, days below 40°F and 50°F); the RTIC Ultra-Tough Soft Pro is Switchback Travel's top pick with no measured figure and is scored on spec, marked unverified. Warranty terms were read from each maker's page on 2026-09-21. Repairability scores low across the board because no soft-cooler maker sells zippers or liners as parts, which is itself the finding. Units we claim to have tested: 0.
The measured numbers
Why a $70 cooler is first
The honest caveats: the Titan is not leakproof (a flip lid is not a welded seal), its shell is light, and a lifetime defect warranty excludes normal wear, warping and discoloration. If you need a soft cooler that rides on its side in a kayak, buy the Hopper or the RTIC Ultra-Tough Soft Pro. On ice alone the order is M20 (3.6 days), HD30 (3.0), BP25 (2.5), Flip 18 (2.4), AO Canvas 24 (2.3), Titan (2.1), Soft Pack 30 (1.8), Flip 12 (1.6). Buyer's guide: the soft cooler you keep
The closure is the product
Waterproof zipper (Yeti, RTIC Ultra-Tough): leakproof, needs lubricant, the most common failure. Magnetic (Hopper M20): no zipper, not fully leakproof. Roll-top (Engel BP25): no zipper, slow. Flip lid (Titan): no zipper, not leakproof. Fabric zipper (RTIC Lightweight, lunch bags): not for loose ice, and RTIC says so.
Welded liner or nothing
AO, Yeti, RTIC Ultra-Tough and Engel HD publish welded seams. A glued liner separates. No maker here sells a replacement liner, so the liner is the life of the cooler.
Read the term, because there are no parts
Yeti 3 years, Arctic Zone lifetime, everyone else 1 year or 90 days. On a product with no replaceable parts, the term is the only repair plan. Every term, quoted; what RTIC's 1 year covers.
Then pack it right

Plenty of sites say they filled every cooler on this list with ice and watched it for a week. We don't say that, and we say so on every page. What we do instead: read the maker's published capacity, insulation, dimensions and weight; quote the warranty term from the maker's own warranty page with the date we read it; check whether the latches, gaskets, plugs, lids and straws are sold as parts; and cite the third-party ice-retention tests (OutdoorGearLab, Outdoor Life, Treeline, Outside, Gear Patrol) as their measurements, never ours. Every figure links to where it came from.
Scores are editorial judgments from that documented research, not lab results. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubric and its weights are published.
