Drinkware / Guide
Are tumblers dishwasher safe? Mostly yes now, and the brand-by-brand list is below
Insulated steel tumblers used to be hand-wash only. Most are not any more, but the instruction still differs by brand and sometimes by part, and getting it wrong is how you void a warranty on the one failure it covers.

The short answer
The honest version of this answer is: check the page for the exact cup, because the instruction varies by brand, by model and sometimes by part. What follows is every instruction we read on the makers' own pages and listings for the cups on this site, quoted rather than summarised.
Brand by brand, quoted
| Cup | What the maker says | Practical reading |
|---|---|---|
| YETI Rambler 30 oz, 26 oz Bottle, 24 oz Ceramic Mug | “Dishwasher safe” | Yes, including the MagSlider and Chug caps |
| Stanley Quencher H2.0 40, IceFlow 30, ProTour 40, Stay-Hot Camp Mug 24 | “Dishwasher safe” | Yes; take the straw and lid apart first |
| Simple Modern Trek 40, Classic 24 | “Dishwasher safe; disassemble tumbler, lid and straw” | Yes, disassembled |
| Simple Modern Voyager Mug 12 | “Top rack, mug and lid” | Top rack only |
| Simple Modern Summit 30 Straw | “Lid is top-rack dishwasher safe, and most bottles are too” | Lid top rack; check the bottle finish |
| Hydro Flask 32 oz Wide Mouth, 40 oz Travel Tumbler | “Dishwasher safe”; the straw lid disassembles from the cup | Yes, disassembled |
| Owala FreeSip 32, 40 oz Tumbler, 24 oz Tumbler, Kids' FreeSip 16 | “Dishwasher-safe lid; hand-washable cup” | Lid yes, cup no |
| Klean Kanteen insulated and painted bottles | “Hand washing recommended for painted and insulated styles” | Hand wash |
| RTIC Road Trip 40, Outback Bottle 32 | “Dishwasher safe; lid and straw top rack” | Yes; lid on the top rack |
| Thermos Stainless King Travel Mug 16 | “Top rack only” | Top rack only |
Every cell quotes the maker's own page or Amazon listing as read for this site's product research, with the date recorded in each product's sources. If your cup is not on this list, the instruction is printed on its own page — prefer that over a general rule.
Why it used to be no
A vacuum-insulated cup is two steel walls with the air pumped out between them, sealed at the base. The fear with dishwashers was never the steel — it was that a long, very hot cycle would heat the trapped seal and stress the weld, and that a cup which went in insulated would come out as a single-wall cup that sweats and never holds cold again.
That failure is real and it still happens, which is why Stanley's lifetime warranty text specifically names “degradation of thermal performance” as covered and Simple Modern's names “drinkware that has lost its insulating properties.” Those clauses exist because the seal is the thing that goes. What changed is manufacturing: brands now rate their seals for domestic dishwasher cycles and say so on the page. If a brand does not say so, that silence is the answer.
If your cup has already stopped holding cold, that is a warranty conversation rather than a washing one: why is my YETI not keeping ice walks through the diagnosis, and how long do tumblers keep drinks cold sets the baseline you should expect.
Top rack, and why it matters
“Top rack only” is not brand caution for its own sake. The heating element in most domestic dishwashers sits in the floor of the tub, and the bottom rack runs hotter — hot enough to deform a polypropylene lid and, over many cycles, to put more thermal stress on a base seal than the manufacturer tested for.
So the safe default for any tumbler, whatever the label says, is: cup upside down on the bottom rack if the maker allows it, lid and straw on the top rack, no heated dry cycle. Heated drying is the part that does most of the cosmetic damage, and skipping it costs nothing.
Lids and straws come apart
Every maker that says “disassemble” means it, and this is where tumblers actually get dirty. A straw lid has three or four separable parts — the cover, the gasket, the straw and sometimes a spout — and water does not circulate through an assembled one. Mould grows in the gasket channel, not in the cup.
Simple Modern asks for the tumbler, lid and straw to be taken apart. Hydro Flask's 40 oz straw lid disassembles from the cup. Stanley's ProTour lid has a removable spout and a seal Stanley calls replaceable, which is both easier to clean and buyable when it perishes. Owala's lid goes in the machine while the cup does not, which is the inverse of most brands and worth re-reading before you load it.
Full method, including the gasket channel and what to do about a smell, is in how to clean a tumbler lid and straw.
The warranty angle
Here is the part worth getting right. The failure most tumbler warranties cover is exactly the failure a dishwasher can cause: loss of insulation. If you wash a cup against the maker's stated instruction and the vacuum fails, you have handed the manufacturer a clean reason to decline the claim.
That is a live risk on the two brands that say hand wash. Owala covers bottles, mugs and tumblers for a limited lifetime against defects in materials and workmanship — and asks for the cup to be hand-washed. Klean Kanteen's Strong as Steel lifetime limited warranty covers manufacturing defects for the original purchaser — and recommends hand washing for painted and insulated styles. Neither says a dishwasher voids anything. Both give you a reason not to risk it.

How we scored this
What we checked before picking
Every pick on this page is built from documents you can open yourself: the maker's published capacity, insulation, dimensions and weight; the warranty term quoted from the maker's own warranty page with the date we read it; the parts catalogue, to confirm the latches, gaskets, plugs, lids and straws can actually be bought; and the third-party ice-retention tests that measured these models (OutdoorGearLab, Outdoor Life, Treeline, Outside, Gear Patrol), credited to the publisher that ran them. Every figure links to where it came from, so you can check the pick before you buy it.
Scores are editorial judgments built from that documented research. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubric and its weights are published.
Questions
Frequently asked
Are YETI tumblers dishwasher safe?
Yes. YETI states dishwasher safe for the Rambler 30 oz tumbler, the 26 oz bottle with Chug Cap and the 24 oz ceramic lined mug, and the MagSlider lid is dishwasher safe too.
Are Stanley tumblers dishwasher safe?
Yes. Stanley states dishwasher safe for the Quencher H2.0 40 oz, the IceFlow Flip Straw 30 oz, the Quencher ProTour 40 oz and the Stay-Hot Camp Mug 24 oz. Take the straw and lid apart first so water reaches the gasket channel.
Can you put an Owala in the dishwasher?
The lid, yes. Owala asks for the cup to be hand-washed — it is stated for the FreeSip 32, the 40 oz and 24 oz Tumblers and the Kids' FreeSip 16.
Will a dishwasher ruin an insulated tumbler?
It can, if the maker has not rated the seal for it. The failure is loss of vacuum, which shows up as a cup that sweats and no longer holds cold. Brands that rate their cups for the dishwasher say so on the page; silence is the answer for the ones that do not.
Top rack or bottom rack?
Lid and straw on the top rack always. The cup goes upside down on the bottom rack only if the maker permits it, and skip the heated dry cycle either way — that is what dulls the finish.
Does the dishwasher void a tumbler warranty?
No brand here says so outright. But because most terms cover exactly the failure a dishwasher can cause — lost insulation — washing against a maker's stated instruction gives them a clean reason to decline. See the tumbler warranty comparison.
