The best tumblers for carbonated drinks, and the bottles the makers tell you not to use

Why this is a real question

Carbonated drinks in a sealed vacuum vessel are a pressure problem, not a taste problem. As the liquid warms or gets shaken, CO2 leaves solution and has nowhere to go, so pressure builds behind a gasket that was designed to hold water in, not gas back. Owala's FAQ puts the consequence plainly: hot, carbonated and perishable liquids “may build up pressure within the bottle and unexpectedly leak or spray out.” Stanley's FAQ says the same in one line: “It is not recommended to use carbonated drinks in all sealed containers as the CO2 can produce unwanted pressure within your product.”

So the vessels that work for soda are the ones that are not fully sealed — tumblers with a vented or splash-resistant lid — or the ones that keep the drink in its own can. That is the whole answer, and it is why a $45 tumbler beats a $50 bottle for a can of seltzer.

The vessels cleared for soda

There is a practical difference between the two approaches. The Owala tumblers give you 24 or 40 oz of soda over ice, with a straw you can remove, and they will go flat over an hour like any poured drink. The Hopsulator keeps the can sealed, so the fizz lasts as long as the can does — it is the better tool for one drink and useless for a day of seltzer. All three carry a limited lifetime term on defects, which is the strongest paperwork in this corner of the category.

The ones the makers rule out

This is the more useful half of the page, because it covers what is probably already in your cupboard:

• Owala stainless FreeSip, Tritan bottles, Kids' FreeSip, Kids' Flip and Flip — “Not for use with hot, carbonated, or perishable liquids,” per Owala's FAQ. That includes the FreeSip 32 oz and the Kids' FreeSip.
• YETI Rambler straw caps — the Rambler Jr. listing states the straw cap “cannot be used with hot, carbonated or pulpy drinks.”
• Any sealed insulated bottle — Stanley's FAQ advises against carbonation in all sealed containers. Treat screw-cap and chug-cap bottles as off the list unless the maker says otherwise in writing.
• Hot drinks through a straw lid — a separate warning worth repeating: Owala notes that a straw draws liquid from the bottom of the vessel, where hot liquid is hottest, which is a scald risk.

None of that means a bottle will explode if you put a seltzer in it once. It means the maker will not stand behind it, a gasket under sustained pressure deforms, and the first thing you will notice is a bottle that leaks flat water a month later. On a site built around what the term actually covers, using a vessel outside its stated use is the fastest way to void it.

The Stanley Quencher question

It is the most-asked version of this question, and the honest answer is that Stanley's own pages disagree with each other. Stanley's FAQ gives the general warning about sealed containers quoted above. Stanley's Australian site has published that the Quencher H2.0 is suitable for carbonated drinks because the FlowState lid accommodates carbonation. Stanley's US support article on caring for a Quencher would not load for us on 2026-09-26 (the request failed at the TLS handshake), so we cannot quote it.

What is not in dispute: the Quencher's three-position lid is not leakproof, which is exactly why pressure is less of a concern in it than in a bottle. If you want a Stanley for soda, that mechanical fact plus the brand's own regional guidance is the best you have, and it is weaker than Owala's one-line FAQ entry. Look for the word “carbonated” on the maker's page

Not on a retailer listing, not in a review: on the product page or the FAQ. Two brands say it plainly, and everyone else stays quiet for a reason.

Vented beats sealed for fizz

A splash-resistant tumbler lid lets CO2 escape slowly. A leakproof bottle cap holds it against a gasket. For soda, the leakier lid is the safer one.

For one can, insulate the can

A can cooler keeps the drink in the vessel the drink was engineered for, and it is the only way to keep a seltzer sharp for an hour outdoors.

Never carbonate a kids' bottle

Every kids' bottle we could find a statement for rules out carbonation, including Owala's and the YETI Rambler Jr. straw cap.
