How long do tumblers keep drinks cold? Every published figure, and the one that was actually measured
Makers claim 11 to 59 hours. Exactly one insulated vessel on this site has an independent cold-retention measurement, and a cheap non-vacuum bottle in the same test was warm in an hour. That gap is the real answer.

The honest range
Two numbers get conflated in every one of these claims and they are not the same thing. “Cold for X hours” means the drink is still cool and pleasant. “Iced for X days” means there is still visible ice in the cup. Stanley publishes both for the same tumbler and the gap is enormous: the Quencher H2.0 “stays cold for 11 Hrs” and “stays cold with ice for 2 Days”. The second figure is longer because melting ice holds the contents at freezing while it lasts; once the ice is gone the drink starts climbing.
So the practical answer for a decent vacuum cup, full and lid on: cold all day, ice overnight, warm by the second afternoon. Anything beyond that depends on the variables in the last section far more than on which brand you bought.
Every published figure, side by side
The one independently measured result in the category
In September 2026 Treeline Review put twelve bottles in direct sun with ice water in them. The CamelBak Podium stainless steel 22 oz held icy water for nearly 24 hours — the longest of the twelve. In the same test, the CamelBak Podium Chill 21 oz, which is double-wall insulated polypropylene rather than vacuum-insulated steel, was “only slightly cold” after about an hour.
That is the single most useful pair of numbers on this page, because it brackets the real variable. Twenty-four hours against one hour is the difference between a vacuum wall and no vacuum wall. The differences betweenvacuum-insulated steel cups — Stanley's 11 hours, Simple Modern's 24, Klean Kanteen's 59 — have never been measured against each other by anyone whose protocol we could read, and the fact that Klean Kanteen publishes two different figures for the same bottle should tell you how much weight those claims can carry.
If you want the same honesty applied to coolers, where there are comparable lab results, the cooler ice retention chart is the sourced table and how ice retention tests work explains why two labs disagree by two days on the same cooler.
What actually changes the answer
How full it is. A half-empty cup is half air, and air warms. Fill it.
How much ice, and what shape. Ice is the thermal battery; the drink is just what sits around it. More ice and bigger pieces last longer, exactly as in a cooler — block ice vs cubed ice sets out that trade with the evidence that exists and no multiplier that does not.
Whether the lid is on and sealed. An open slider lid such as YETI's MagSlider is a hole in the top of your insulation. A sealed flip-straw lid keeps the cold air in. BrüMate publishes its Hopsulator Trio figure as “up to 24 hours with the lid” for exactly this reason.
Whether you pre-chilled it. A warm steel cup spends its first ice on itself, the same way a warm cooler does. Thirty seconds of cold tap water before you fill it is free — the pre-chill logic is identical at cup scale.
Direct sun and a dark finish. Treeline's test was in direct sun deliberately, because that is where bottles live. A powder-coated dark cup in a car in July is not the condition any of these claims describe.
And whether the vacuum is still intact. A cup that used to hold ice all day and now sweats on the outside has lost its vacuum, which is a warranty claim at most brands rather than a cleaning problem — why a tumbler stops keeping ice separates the two.

How we scored this
What we checked before picking
Every pick on this page is built from documents you can open yourself: the maker's published capacity, insulation, dimensions and weight; the warranty term quoted from the maker's own warranty page with the date we read it; the parts catalogue, to confirm the latches, gaskets, plugs, lids and straws can actually be bought; and the third-party ice-retention tests that measured these models (OutdoorGearLab, Outdoor Life, Treeline, Outside, Gear Patrol), credited to the publisher that ran them. Every figure links to where it came from, so you can check the pick before you buy it.
Scores are editorial judgments built from that documented research. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubric and its weights are published.

Questions
Frequently asked
How long do tumblers keep drinks cold?
A full vacuum-insulated tumbler with the lid on keeps a drink genuinely cold for most of a day and usually still has ice the next morning. Published claims run from 11 hours cold (Stanley Quencher) through 24 hours (Simple Modern, Owala, Hydro Flask) to up to 59 hours iced (Klean Kanteen's TKWide listing).
Which tumbler keeps drinks cold the longest?
On published claims, Klean Kanteen's TKWide: up to 59 hours iced on its Amazon listing. On measured evidence, the CamelBak Podium stainless 22 oz, which held icy water for nearly 24 hours in direct sun in Treeline Review's twelve-bottle test — the only independent cold measurement of any vessel on this site.
Do expensive tumblers keep drinks colder?
Vacuum insulation versus none is worth about a day; brand versus brand among vacuum cups has never been measured. In the one test we can cite, a vacuum steel bottle held ice nearly 24 hours and a non-vacuum double-wall bottle was barely cold after an hour. Within the vacuum class, price buys warranty, lids and parts — read is a YETI tumbler worth it.
Why does my tumbler not keep ice as long as it used to?
Usually a failed vacuum, and the giveaway is condensation on the outside of the cup. That is a defect claim at most brands — Simple Modern names lost insulating properties explicitly in its warranty. The diagnosis is here.
Does the lid change how long a drink stays cold?
Yes. An open slider lid vents cold air continuously; a sealed flip or straw lid does not. BrüMate publishes its 24 hour cold figure as applying “with the lid”, and YETI warns that its MagSlider is not even leakproof.
Where do these numbers come from?
Each maker's own product page or Amazon listing, quoted with the date we read it, plus Treeline Review's September 2026 bottle test for the two CamelBak figures. We have not tested anything ourselves.
