The best tumblers for smoothies: a wide mouth, a removable straw, and no pulp restriction
A smoothie is the hardest thing you can ask of a tumbler. It is too thick for a narrow straw, it stains, it sets like cement if you leave it, and some makers specifically forbid pulpy drinks through their lids. Five cups that handle it.

What a smoothie actually needs from a cup
Four things, and only one of them is insulation.
A mouth you can pour into. A blender jug does not pour in a thin stream. Every cup on this page is a wide-body tumbler or a wide-mouth bottle; a narrow sports bottle is a funnel job and a mess.
A straw you can actually draw through, and buy again. Straw bore diameter is the number that decides this and almost nobody publishes it, so we have not invented one. What is publishable is whether the straw is removable and sold separately: Simple Modern sells Trek and Classic straws and lids individually and in three-packs, Owala sells replacement straws in its accessories range, Stanley sells straws and lids in its Lids collection, and Klean Kanteen's Twist Cap has a built-in reusable stainless straw with a gasket kit sold for the caps. A straw you can replace is a cup that survives smoothies; a molded-in straw is a cup you throw away.
Disassembly for the dishwasher. Simple Modern's instruction for both its cups here is to disassemble tumbler, lid and straw before washing. Owala's lid is dishwasher-safe and the cup is hand-wash. Stanley's Quencher is dishwasher safe. That difference shows up every single day with a smoothie cup.
Cold hours, last. They are the published claims: 24 hours for the Trek 40, 24+ for the Classic 24, 11 hours cold and 2 days iced for the Quencher, up to 59 hours iced on Klean Kanteen's Amazon listing (and up to 66 on its own TKWide page), and no figure at all for the Owala Tumbler. A smoothie is drunk in twenty minutes; this metric matters least here and we have weighted the page accordingly.
The pulp restriction nobody reads
The five, side by side
The Owala lid deserves its label. Its 2-in-1 sip-or-swig opening means the same lid gives you a straw for a thin smoothie and a wide drinking opening for a thick one, without changing parts — and Owala's own FAQ names the 40 oz and 24 oz Tumblers as the models that hold cold, carbonated and hot drinks, which is the broadest permission any brand here gives. Stanley's rotating cover does something similar in three positions (straw, wide mouth, full cover), with the wide-mouth position being the one you want for a thick pour and for getting a bottle brush in.
Cleaning is the whole ballgame
A smoothie cup fails at the lid, not the vacuum. Fruit sugars and dairy set in the straw and under the gasket, and within a few weeks the cup smells and the lid drags. The routine that prevents it is boring and short: rinse immediately, disassemble, and get a brush through the straw — not a dishwasher cycle three days later.
How to clean a tumbler lid and straw is the full method, including the mold case. Then two warranty notes worth knowing before you buy: Stanley's lifetime term covers the stainless vacuum body and excludes lids, seals and straws, while Simple Modern's limited lifetime warranty explicitly covers broken lids and drinkware that has lost its insulating properties. For a cup that will have its lid cycled through a dishwasher 300 times a year, that distinction is the one we weight — see tumbler warranty comparison for every term quoted, and tumbler lid replacement for what each brand sells.

Buyer's guide: a cup that survives smoothies
Search the product page for “pulpy”
If the maker excludes pulpy drinks from the lid, believe them. It is a design limit, not boilerplate.
Pick a lid with a wide-open position
Owala's swig opening and Stanley's wide-mouth position both let you drink a thick smoothie without a straw and get a brush in afterwards.
Check the straw is sold separately
Straws are consumables on a smoothie cup. Simple Modern, Owala and Stanley all sell replacements; Klean Kanteen's is stainless and built into the cap.
Choose dishwasher-safe, and disassemble anyway
Every maker here tells you to take the lid apart first. The cycle does not reach inside a straw.
Weigh the cup empty before you commit to 40 ounces
The Trek 40 is 20.25 oz empty and the Quencher 40 is 1.18 lb; add 40 ounces of smoothie and you are carrying over three pounds. Best 30 oz tumblers is the lighter size class.
How we scored this
What we checked before picking
Every pick on this page is built from documents you can open yourself: the maker's published capacity, insulation, dimensions and weight; the warranty term quoted from the maker's own warranty page with the date we read it; the parts catalogue, to confirm the latches, gaskets, plugs, lids and straws can actually be bought; and the third-party ice-retention tests that measured these models (OutdoorGearLab, Outdoor Life, Treeline, Outside, Gear Patrol), credited to the publisher that ran them. Every figure links to where it came from, so you can check the pick before you buy it.
Scores are editorial judgments built from that documented research. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubric and its weights are published.
Corrections & updates
- First published. Chosen on published lid descriptions, dishwasher instructions, parts availability and each maker's stated drink restrictions; no straw bore diameter is published by any maker and none is claimed here.
Questions
Frequently asked
What is the best tumbler for smoothies?
The Simple Modern Trek 40: a wide 40-ounce body that takes a blender pour, a straw lid in the box and a leakproof flip lid sold separately, full disassembly for the dishwasher, a claimed 24 hours cold, and a limited lifetime warranty that covers broken lids.
Can you put a smoothie in a Stanley Quencher?
Yes — Stanley publishes no pulp restriction for the Quencher H2.0, and its rotating cover has a wide-mouth position that is far easier to pour a thick smoothie into than a straw hole. Note that the Quencher is for cold drinks only and that Stanley's lifetime warranty excludes the lid, seal and straw.
Do smoothies clog tumbler straws?
They can, and some makers exclude pulpy drinks for exactly that reason — YETI states its Rambler Jr. straw cap cannot be used with pulpy drinks. The fix is a lid with a wide-open position, a removable straw you can brush, and a rinse before it sets.
What size tumbler is best for a smoothie?
A single blender jug is usually 24 to 32 ounces, so a 24 oz cup takes one serving and a 40 oz takes a full batch with room for ice. Forty ounces of smoothie plus the cup is over three pounds to carry, which is the real argument for the 24.
How do you clean a smoothie out of a tumbler straw?
Rinse immediately, disassemble the lid, and run a narrow bottle brush the length of the straw before anything dries. The full method is here, including what to do once mold has started.
