How to keep ice longer in a cooler: the steps, ranked by how many hours each is worth

The one sentence of physics

Ice melts when heat reaches it, and heat reaches it three ways: through the walls (fixed by the cooler), through the lid every time it opens (fixed by you), and from warm air and warm contents already inside (fixed by you). The second and third are where the hours are. That is why the same YETI Tundra 45 held 98 hours to 40°F in OutdoorGearLab's sealed room and why Switchback Travel tells readers to expect about half a maker's claim in real use: the lab never opens the lid and never loads a warm can.

The steps, ranked

1. Pre-chill the cooler. A room-temperature rotomolded cooler is 25–40 lb of plastic and foam at 70°F, and the first bag of ice goes into cooling it. Fill it with sacrificial ice or frozen jugs the night before, dump, then load. 2. Fill it. Air is the enemy. A 65-quart cooler one-third full has 40 quarts of air that warms every time the lid opens and has to be re-chilled by the ice. Fill dead space with frozen water bottles or crumpled newspaper. A full 45 beats a half-empty 65, which is the whole argument of what size cooler do I need.
3. Block ice on the bottom, cubes on top. Block ice has less surface area per pound and melts slower; cubes fill gaps and chill contents fast. Frozen gallon jugs are block ice you can drink.
4. A hard ice pack under the block. Outdoor Life's June 2025 test found the $8 Igloo MaxCold block at 31°F after four hours on an open counter and the YETI ICE Sheet at 28°F; in a closed cooler under a layer of ice they hold far longer and never leave water. Best ice packs.
5. Shade and a cover. A cooler in direct sun on a hot tailgate absorbs radiant heat through the lid, and a light-colored towel or a blanket over it is worth more than any brand difference on this site.
6. Don't drain. Meltwater at 33°F is colder than the air that replaces it and keeps the remaining ice submerged. Drain only when water rises above the ice or when contents need to stay dry.
7. Two coolers. Drinks get opened forty times a day; food three. Put drinks in a soft cooler and food in the hard one, and the food cooler's ice lasts days longer. Hard cooler vs soft cooler.

Gear Patrol's 90°F patio test is the closest published analog to a July campsite: a Tundra 45 read 42.4°F and an RTIC 45 read 44.8°F after 72 hours with the lid shut. Add a lid that opens and a cooler in the sun and three days becomes two.
