How to clean a soft cooler so the liner and the zipper outlive the warranty

What kills a soft cooler

Two things, and neither is the foam. The liner gets stained, absorbs odor, and if it is glued rather than welded, separates at the seam when stored wet or hot. The zipper (on the coolers that have a waterproof one) dries out, gets sand in the teeth, and either sticks until someone forces it or wears until it stops sealing. The after-every-use routine

1. Empty it the same day. Meltwater and can rings are the stain and the smell.
2. Rinse with fresh water. Salt on a zipper is the fastest way to a stuck one.
3. Wipe the liner with a cloth and mild dish soap in water. AO Coolers' FAQ: “clean the liner using a mixture of mild soap and water ... remove the liner from the cooler, wipe it thoroughly, and allow it to air dry completely after each use.” That is the instruction for a removable liner; for a fixed liner, wipe it in place.
4. Dry it open, out of direct sun for the liner but with airflow. Prop the lid or roll-top open.
5. Store it unzipped and empty. A zipped, damp cooler grows what makes it smell.

The deep clean

Every few weeks in season, or before storage: warm water, a tablespoon of dish soap, a soft brush on the liner and the inside of the lid, attention to the seam where the liner meets the shell. Rinse until it stops foaming. If the liner comes out (AO's does), take it out and do both sides. Do not put a soft cooler in a washing machine, a dishwasher or a dryer; the foam absorbs water it never gives back and the welds are not designed for it. Do not use bleach on a TPU liner; it dries and cracks the material over time and every maker's care instruction we could read says mild soap.

The smell

A soft cooler that smells has bacteria in the liner seam or the foam edge. In order of escalation: a wash with dish soap and a thorough dry; a paste of baking soda and water left on the liner for an hour then rinsed; a wipe with white vinegar diluted half and half with water, rinsed, then a day open in the sun (sun for the smell, then shade for the liner); and if none of that works, the smell is in the foam and the cooler is done. Store it with a dry, open box of baking soda inside between uses.

Zipper care

Waterproof zippers (YETI Hopper Flip, RTIC Ultra-Tough) need lubricant: a zipper-specific lube or a silicone-based one, applied to the teeth and worked through a few times, every few uses and any time it drags. Rinse sand out before you zip. Pull the slider straight, not around a corner, and never force it; the teeth separate from the tape when forced, and that is not a warranty defect. Fabric zippers need only rinsing. Magnetic closures (Hopper M20) need the mating surfaces wiped so grit does not hold them apart. Roll-tops need nothing.

What the warranties say

YETI's document: “You must have used the product only as intended and in accordance with the product's care instructions”; punctures, scratches and normal wear are excluded. RTIC: “failure to follow recommended care and use instructions will not be covered,” along with water damage and normal wear.
