How to choose a soft cooler: the closure, the liner, and the term, in that order

The closure

Four kinds, and each fails differently. A waterproof zipper (YETI Hopper Flip, RTIC's EZ Waterproof Zipper on the Ultra-Tough line) is leakproof and the most common failure point: the teeth separate or the slider wears until it stops sealing, usually in season two or three, and it needs lubricant to stay easy. A magnetic closure (YETI Hopper M20) has no zipper, opens wide, and is leak-resistant rather than leakproof by YETI's own description. A roll-top (Engel BP25) has no zipper and no magnet, is dry-bag leakproof when rolled, and is slow to open. A flip lid (Arctic Zone Titan Deep Freeze) has no zipper and is not leakproof at all. And a fabric zipper (RTIC's Lightweight Backpack, most lunch bags) is not a cooler closure; RTIC says its fabric-zipper pack is “not designed to be used with loose ice.”

The liner

Welded (RF-welded or heat-welded TPU: AO Coolers, RTIC Ultra-Tough, YETI, Engel HD) means the liner is one piece with no glued seam to separate. AO explains its own: “RF welded seams means the liner is heat-melted into one solid piece, rather than glued.” Glued liners are what $30 coolers have and what separates in a hot car. No maker on this site sells a replacement liner, so the liner is the cooler's lifespan. Foam and ice

AO publishes 3/4 in of closed-cell polyurethane; most soft coolers do not publish a thickness at all. The measured results are the useful number: in OutdoorGearLab's September 2026 table the range is 0.8 days (a lunchbox) to 3.6 (the M20), with the Engel HD30 at 3.0, the Hopper Flip 18 at 2.4, the AO Canvas 24 at 2.3, the Titan at 2.1 and the RTIC Soft Pack 30 at 1.8. The term

Because nothing on a soft cooler is a replaceable part, the warranty is the only repair plan, and the terms are short. Quoted from each maker on 2026-09-21: YETI Hopper, 3 years. RTIC soft-sided coolers and backpack coolers, 1 year; RTIC day coolers, 90 days. Engel HD soft coolers and BP25, 1 year. Igloo hard and soft coolers, 1 year. Arctic Zone soft products, limited lifetime. AO Coolers and Carhartt: pages we could not read, marked unverified. If you are spending more than $150, spend it on a term you can read. Size and carry

Can counts on soft coolers are rated without ice. Halve them: a 30-can cooler holds 15 cans and a bag of ice, and that is about 25 lb, which is the most a shoulder strap is pleasant for. Backpacks carry more comfortably and are the choice past a parking lot. Duffels open wider and pack flatter. Cubes (Hopper Flip) fit footwells and cockpits.
