How to clean a cooler, and what the smell means when cleaning does not fix it

Three places hold the smell in a hard cooler and only one of them is the part you can see. If the fish is still there after a scrub, you are smelling the gasket groove, the drain channel or wet foam — and two of those three are a replaceable part.

Warranty terms as of Oct 9, 2026. Every term on this page was read from the manufacturer's own warranty page on that date, and each is linked. Brands change terms without notice (RTIC's hard-cooler term has moved more than once): confirm on the linked page before you buy, and tell us if a term has changed.

The method

A hard cooler is a polyethylene shell with a rubber or silicone gasket, a threaded plug and a channelled floor, and every one of those things cleans differently.

One: empty and drain it standing up. Pull the plug and let gravity do the work. RTIC describes its plug as designed “to drain when partially open without having to fully remove the plug”, over a floor that is channelled and recessed for draining — that channel is also where the residue collects, so get water running through it before you start scrubbing.

Two: warm water and a mild detergent on the interior and the underside of the lid. No maker page we read publishes a sanitizing procedure or a bleach dilution for a cooler, so we are not going to quote one at you. Soap, water and mechanical scrubbing is what the material tolerates indefinitely.

Three: brush the gasket groove and around the hinge. This is the step that actually decides whether the smell comes back, and it is the step everyone skips because the groove looks clean.

Four: rinse, then dry completely with the lid open. Not closed. A sealed cooler with a damp interior is a culture dish, and the gasket that makes it hold ice is the same gasket that stops it drying out. Prop it open in the shade, not in direct sun — Igloo adds UV inhibitors and infrared protection to shells like the Marine Ultra's precisely because sun degrades polyethylene, and a cooler left open on a driveway all summer goes chalky.

The three places a smell lives

Mold, and the gasket groove

Visible mold on the liner wipes off. Mold in the gasket groove does not, because the groove stays wet. Work along the groove with a stiff brush, lift the gasket where it is removable, and clean both faces — then dry the groove specifically before you shut the lid.

If the gasket is perished, deformed or permanently discolored, replace it. On a rotomolded cooler this is a genuine consumable: RTIC sells gaskets sized per model (20, 45, 65, 110 and 145 QT), Engel builds its ArcticVault silicone gasket into the High Performance line, and aftermarket gasket runs are sold by the foot for YETI- and RTIC-shaped lids. A compressed or dirty gasket is also the most common cause of a cooler that stopped holding ice, which is a separate diagnosis — why is my cooler not keeping ice walks through it, and latch, gasket and drain-plug replacement is the job itself.

The soft-cooler version of this problem is different enough to have its own page: a soft cooler's liner is welded fabric and its zipper is the failure point, and some are designed to be cleaned in a way hard coolers are not — Arctic Zone's Titan HardBody coolers have a removable FDA-compliant liner that lifts out, with Microban treatment on the lining, and AO states its canvas coolers' liners are removable for cleaning. See how to clean a soft cooler.

When the foam is wet

A cooler that smells from inside the walls, weighs more than it used to, or has started holding ice noticeably worse has water in the insulation. The usual routes in are a cracked liner, a drain plug whose gasket has failed, or a cooler put away wet and then frozen.

This is not a cleaning problem and it is not a part you can buy. It is a defect claim, and whether you have one depends entirely on the term: YETI and RTIC cover their rotomolded hard coolers for five years, Engel for ten, Pelican's Elite line is guaranteed for life, and Igloo covers hard and soft coolers for one year. Every term on the site is quoted and dated at cooler warranty comparison, and YETI's and RTIC's claim processes have their own pages.

One warranty trap worth knowing before you start repairing: YETI's warranty does not cover defects caused by third-party replacement parts. An aftermarket latch or gasket is the right call on a cooler that is out of term and the wrong call on one that is still inside it.

Prevention, which is the real answer

Four habits, and they cost nothing.

Store it with the lid open or propped. A cracked lid is the single difference between a cooler that smells and one that does not.

Keep raw meat and fish out of the meltwater. Game bags on a rack, sealed containers, and a cracked drain so melt runs out instead of pooling. Best coolers for hunting and best coolers for fishing cover the hardware for that.

Rinse the same day, not the next weekend. Everything that makes a cooler smell is easy to remove before it dries.

And pack it so there is less water in the first place. Hard packs and block ice make a fraction of the meltwater that a bag of cubes does — how to pack a cooler and how many ice packs do I need cover the trade.

How we scored this

What we checked before picking

Every pick on this page is built from documents you can open yourself: the maker's published capacity, insulation, dimensions and weight; the warranty term quoted from the maker's own warranty page with the date we read it; the parts catalogue, to confirm the latches, gaskets, plugs, lids and straws can actually be bought; and the third-party ice-retention tests that measured these models (OutdoorGearLab, Outdoor Life, Treeline, Outside, Gear Patrol), credited to the publisher that ran them. Every figure links to where it came from, so you can check the pick before you buy it.

Scores are editorial judgments built from that documented research. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubric and its weights are published.

Questions

Frequently asked

How do you clean a cooler?

Empty it, pull the drain plug and flush the channel, wash the interior and the underside of the lid with warm water and a mild detergent, brush the gasket groove and around the hinge, rinse, and dry it completely with the lid propped open in the shade.

How do you get the smell out of a cooler?

Scrub the gasket groove and the drain channel, not just the liner — those are where fish oil, blood and dairy sit. If the smell survives a thorough clean and a full dry, it is in the gasket (replace it) or in wet insulation foam (a warranty claim, not a cleaning job).

How do you clean mold out of a cooler?

Wipe the liner, then work a stiff brush along the gasket groove and lift the gasket where it comes out, cleaning both faces. Dry the groove specifically before closing the lid, and store the cooler with the lid propped open afterwards — a sealed damp cooler is where mold starts.

Can I put bleach in my cooler?

No maker page we read publishes a bleach dilution or any sanitizing procedure for a cooler, so we are not going to quote one. Warm water, a mild detergent and mechanical scrubbing is what the shell, the gasket and the plug threads tolerate indefinitely.

Why does my cooler smell even after cleaning?

Because the smell is not on the surface. The gasket groove and the drain-plug threads hold residue a cloth cannot reach, and water that has got behind the liner leaves the smell inside the insulation foam, where nothing can reach it.

Is a smelly cooler covered by warranty?

A smell is not, but wet insulation and a cracked liner are defects — and that is term-dependent: five years from YETI and RTIC on rotomolded hard coolers, ten from Engel, a lifetime guarantee from Pelican, one year from Igloo. Note that YETI's warranty excludes defects caused by third-party replacement parts, so do not fit an aftermarket gasket to a cooler still in term.
