Drinkware / Head to head

Thermos vs YETI: one brand publishes hours, the other publishes a parts list

Both carry a five-year term on vacuum-insulated steel, and they compete in exactly two formats. Thermos is the only one of the two that states how long its drinks stay hot or cold. YETI is the only one of the two that will sell you a replacement lid.

The contenders

The verdict, up front

This is a narrower comparison than the search phrase suggests, and narrowing it is the useful part. Within the insulated drinkware this site covers and has sourced specs for, Thermos and YETI contest exactly two formats: the handled travel mug and the kids' bottle. Everything else people mean by “Thermos vs YETI” is really a question about one of those two, or about a format where only one of the brands has an entry we can verify.

In both shared formats the same split appears. Thermos publishes performance. It has printed retention hours on vacuum flasks for over a century, and the Stainless King mug states 7 hours hot and 18 hours cold on its own product page. Its lid is a sealing DrinkLock design described as leak-proof when closed and properly assembled, and Thermos says it fits most standard car cup holders.

YETI publishes durability and parts. Its Ramblers are kitchen-grade 18/8 stainless steel, described as rust and puncture resistant, dishwasher safe, and backed by a documented 5-year limited term with MagSlider lids, straw lids and replacement straws all sold as individual parts. What YETI does not publish, anywhere we can read, is a single retention figure — its copy says it “keeps hot drinks hot and cold drinks cold down to the last sip,” and that is the whole of it.

So the trade is evidence against serviceability. If you want to know how long your coffee stays hot, only one of these two brands will tell you. If you want to replace a lost lid in five years rather than replace the cup, only the other one will sell you one.

Hours: only one brand publishes any

This is the finding that should decide most Thermos-versus-YETI searches, so it is worth stating precisely.

Two caveats keep that honest. Thermos's hours are Thermos's own claim with no published protocol: no ambient temperature, no fill volume, no definition of “hot.” They are not an independent measurement and this site does not treat them as one. And the absence of a YETI figure is not evidence that a Rambler performs worse — it is evidence that YETI has chosen not to compete on that axis.

But for a buyer, an unverified number from the maker is still more decision-useful than no number at all, because it is a commitment you can hold the brand to and compare across its own line. Thermos publishes it on the smaller, cheaper product; YETI withholds it on the larger, dearer one. The hour claims we could find across the whole category are collected in how long do tumblers keep drinks cold, and best coffee travel mugs with a handle ranks the handled mugs on exactly this.

The travel mugs, side by side

The one format where both brands sell a directly comparable product. Every figure is quoted from the maker's page or an authorized dealer listing; neither row is an independent measurement.

The practical differences are larger than the scores suggest. The Thermos Stainless King 16 oz has a sturdy handle, a sealing lid, a sweat-proof exterior, and Thermos states it fits most standard car cup holders. It is also 1.0 lb empty for 16 ounces, which is heavy, it is top-rack dishwasher only, and we could not find a replacement lid for this mug for sale on any page we could read.

The YETI Rambler 24 oz Ceramic Lined Stackable Mug has an easy-grip handle, a DuraSip ceramic lining that removes the metal taste that bothers coffee drinkers, a stackable body and full dishwasher safety. Its own listing then states the disqualifier plainly: “It is not cupholder compatible.” At 6.4 inches high and 5.1 inches wide it is a desk and campsite mug, and at this size YETI sells it without a lid.

So if the mug rides in a car, Thermos wins on the specification sheet, not on brand preference. If it sits on a desk or a tailgate and you care about taste, the ceramic lining is a real advantage no Thermos entry here matches.

Lids: sealing against replaceable

The lid is where both brands make their most interesting admission, and they make opposite ones.

Thermos states its DrinkLock lid is “leak-proof when closed and properly assembled” — a sealing lid on a handled mug, which is unusual, since most handled mugs ship with a splash lid that will empty itself in a bag. YETI states, through its own retailer copy, that the MagSlider lid is “not leakproof and should not be stored inside a backpack.” Both brands told the truth; only one of those sentences is a selling point.

Reverse the question to replacement and the result flips completely. YETI sells MagSlider lids, straw lids and replacement straws as stocked parts, and its warranty documentation covers replacement parts for lost caps — which on a product you intend to own for a decade is worth more than most spec rows, because the lid and the gasket are what fail, not the vacuum body. Thermos lists replacement lids for some of its lines, but we could not confirm one for the Stainless King mug on a page we could read, and the FUNtainer's silicone straws stain and need replacing without a size-confirmed part.

That is the single clearest statement of the trade on this page: Thermos sells a lid that seals, YETI sells a lid you can buy again. Which matters more depends entirely on whether your cup travels in a bag or lives for ten years. The lids and parts we could actually find for sale across the category are listed on tumbler lid replacement.

Warranty: five years each, read differently

Both brands publish 5 years. Thermos's warranty page gives its stainless steel vacuumware a 5-year warranty; YETI's warranty documentation gives the Rambler line 5 years limited. On the headline number this is a tie, which is itself worth knowing — buyers routinely assume YETI's term is longer because the price is.

The difference is in what sits behind the term. YETI publishes a documented claim process and a replacement-parts catalog, so a failed gasket or a lost lid resolves as a parts order rather than a warranty argument. Thermos's 5 years covers the vacuum — which is the component that actually dies in an insulated vessel, and is also the one component neither brand will sell you as a part.

Neither term covers the thing most likely to end the product: a dropped mug, a chewed straw or a lost cap. Every drinkware term we could read is quoted side by side on the tumbler warranty comparison, and if a vessel has stopped holding temperature, why is my YETI not keeping ice covers how to tell a failed vacuum from a failed habit.

Kids' bottles: the other format they share

Both brands sell a 12 oz insulated kids' bottle with a straw lid and a five-year term on the vacuum. Neither publishes a retention figure for its kids' bottle.

The Thermos FUNtainer 12 oz is the cheaper of the two by a clear margin, uses a push-button straw lid that covers the straw between drinks, and comes in the range of colorways a six-year-old will argue about. Thermos does not publish a retention figure for it, and silicone straws stain.

The YETI Rambler Jr. 12 oz is built like the adult bottle — 18/8 steel, double-wall vacuum, a wide-mouth straw cap described as leakproof when closed — and its straw caps and lids are stocked YETI parts, which is the whole argument for paying more for a product a child will drop daily. The listing's own limits: no hot, carbonated or pulpy drinks through the straw cap, and no published hours.

Neither is the retention leader in the class. If a published cold figure is what you want from a kids' bottle, our best insulated water bottles for kids page ranks the format and names the brand that publishes 40 hours.

Tumblers, and where the brands stop overlapping

Search “thermos vs yeti tumbler” and the honest answer is that this site has no Thermos tumbler with sourced specs to set against a Rambler. What we can do is say what the YETI side of that question looks like.

The YETI Rambler 30 oz Tumbler with MagSlider Lid is 18/8 steel, dishwasher safe, 16 oz empty, 7.9 inches tall, on the same 5-year term, with every lid style available as a part. It publishes no hours and its lid is not leakproof. On ounces per dollar it is beaten within the category by Simple Modern and RTIC, which is the argument worked through on is a YETI tumbler worth it and ranked against the field on best insulated tumblers.

Running the other way, Thermos's strength is the format most of its reputation was built on — the sealed flask and the food jar — and this site does not carry one with verified specs, so we make no claim about them in either direction. What we will not do is score a product we have not sourced.

One structural difference does belong in a brand comparison. YETI sells across the whole cold chain, from drinkware to rotomolded coolers, and that breadth is part of what buyers are paying for; the cooler side of it is ranked on best large coolers and cooler brands ranked. Breadth is a convenience, not evidence of performance in any one format, and this page scores the formats.

Which one to buy

Buy the Thermos Stainless King 16 oz if the mug commutes: it is the only one of the two with a sealing lid, a published 7 hours hot and 18 hours cold, and a stated cup-holder fit, on the same 5-year term for less money. Accept 1 lb of empty weight, top-rack-only washing, and no replacement lid you can buy.

Buy the YETI Rambler 24 oz Ceramic Lined Mug if the mug stays put and you want no metal taste, maximum toughness and a lid you can replace in year four. Accept that it does not fit a cup holder, that YETI publishes no hours, and that it is sold without a lid at this size.

For a child's bottle, Thermos if price and colorways decide it, YETI if you want the straw cap to be a part you can reorder for the next five years.

If the real question is a tumbler, this is not a Thermos decision at all — compare the Rambler against Stanley, Simple Modern and Owala on best insulated tumblers instead.

How we scored this

What we checked before picking

Every pick on this page is built from documents you can open yourself: the maker's published capacity, insulation, dimensions and weight; the warranty term quoted from the maker's own warranty page with the date we read it; the parts catalogue, to confirm the latches, gaskets, plugs, lids and straws can actually be bought; and the third-party ice-retention tests that measured these models (OutdoorGearLab, Outdoor Life, Treeline, Outside, Gear Patrol), credited to the publisher that ran them. Every figure links to where it came from, so you can check the pick before you buy it.

Scores run from 8.4 to 10: 9.5–9.8 is category-defining, 9.0–9.4 outstanding, and 8.4–8.9 excellent and strongly recommended. Nothing below 8.4 is listed here — a product that cannot earn 8.4 on the rubric gets replaced by a stronger one rather than published with a weak number.

Scores are editorial judgments built from that documented research. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubric and its weights are published.

Questions

Frequently asked

Is Thermos as good as YETI?

In the two formats where both brands compete, Thermos wins on published evidence and YETI wins on serviceability. The Thermos Stainless King travel mug states 7 hours hot and 18 hours cold with a lid Thermos calls leak-proof when closed; YETI publishes no retention figure for any Rambler and says the MagSlider lid is not leakproof. YETI answers with 18/8 steel, full dishwasher safety and every lid sold as a replacement part. Both terms are 5 years.

Does YETI publish how long a Rambler keeps drinks hot or cold?

No. On every YETI drinkware listing we have read, the claim is qualitative — “keeps hot drinks hot and cold drinks cold down to the last sip” for the Rambler 30, “keeps ice longer and drinks colder” for the Rambler Jr. No hours, no test conditions. Thermos publishes hours on the Stainless King mug but not on the FUNtainer, and neither brand publishes a protocol behind its claims.

Which is cheaper, Thermos or YETI?

Thermos, in both shared formats, and by a wide margin at the kids'-bottle size. Prices move, so each product card on this page shows the current figure rather than a number we typed; the structural point is that Thermos sells a published hour figure and a sealing lid at the lower price, and YETI sells a parts catalog and heavier construction at the higher one.

Is a Thermos travel mug leak-proof?

Thermos describes the Stainless King mug's DrinkLock lid as “leak-proof when closed and properly assembled” — the qualifier is theirs and it matters, because a cross-threaded lid is not a sealed one. That is still a stronger statement than YETI makes: its MagSlider lid is explicitly “not leakproof and should not be stored inside a backpack.”

Thermos or YETI for coffee?

Thermos if the coffee travels: a sealing lid, a published 7 hours hot and a stated cup-holder fit. YETI if the coffee is drunk where you poured it and you dislike the taste of steel: the Rambler 24 oz Ceramic Lined Mug's DuraSip lining removes it, though the mug is not cup-holder compatible and ships without a lid. Best tumblers for coffee ranks the wider field.

Do Thermos and YETI have the same warranty?

The same length, not the same shape. Thermos gives its stainless steel vacuumware 5 years; YETI gives the Rambler line 5 years limited. YETI pairs its term with a documented claim process and a stocked replacement-parts list, so lost lids and failed gaskets become parts orders. Thermos's 5 years covers the vacuum, and we could not find a replacement lid for the Stainless King mug for sale anywhere we could read.
