Inches, not quarts
A 30-inch fish does not care that the cooler is 65 quarts; it cares that the interior is 26 inches long. So this page sorts on interior length first: RTIC 65 at 26 in, Engel 65 at 23.5, Tundra 65 at 23.1, Pelican 45QW at 18.1, Engel 50 at 18, and the Igloo Polar 120 at 33–34.7 inches for the day you need a fish box and not a cooler. The second spec is height from the deck, because a cooler on a boat is a seat: Engel's 50 is 18.25 in tall, its 65 is 16.5, and Engel sells a cushion for both.

On the deck
Fish and ice share a cooler badly: a fish is 60°F of meat, and every one you add is a bag of warmth. The trick is a slurry, half ice and half water, which pulls heat out of a fish faster than dry ice does and keeps it from freezer-burning. A cooler with a good drain (Pelican's hose thread, RTIC's threaded plug) matters more on a boat than anywhere, because you dump and refill the slurry. Drain plug replacement is the repair every boat cooler eventually needs, and RTIC and Engel sell the plug.
On warranty: the boat is salt, sun and vibration, which is the abuse every term excludes and the defect every term covers. Engel's 10 years and Pelican's lifetime are the reason those two top this page over the RTIC 65's longer interior and better measured ice. Buyer's guide: the fish cooler
Measure the biggest fish you keep
Then buy an interior two inches longer. A 65 from RTIC is 26 in; from Engel and YETI, 23 in. Above that, the Polar 120.
Slurry, not ice
Half ice, half water. A fish cools faster in water than in air, and a slurry never freezer-burns.
Buy the plug and the gasket now
Salt strips drain-plug threads and dries gaskets. Engel's plugs are $9.99; RTIC sells gaskets by size. Keep a spare of each in the boat. The swap.
Rinse it every trip
Fresh water on every hinge, latch and thread. It is the difference between a 10-year cooler and a 3-year one.

What is the best cooler for fishing?
The Engel 65: 23.5-inch interior, silicone gasket, dry-ice rated, stainless latch kit sold separately, 10-year term. For longer fish for less, the RTIC 65 (26 in, 5 years). For a lifetime term and a lid scale, the Pelican 45QW.
What size cooler for a kayak?
Something under 20 in long and 12 lb: the YETI Roadie 24 (16.5 in, 13 lb) or a soft cooler. Hard 45s do not fit a hatch. See best soft coolers.
Should I use ice or a slurry for fish?
A slurry (half ice, half water) cools fish faster and prevents freezer burn. Drain and refresh it; a cooler with a threaded, tethered drain plug makes that easy.
Are Yeti coolers good for boats?
The Tundra 65 is the best-known boat cooler and carries 5 years with parts sold; on this site it ranks behind the Engel 65 (10 years) and RTIC 65 (26-inch interior, more measured ice) for fishing specifically.
