Hard Coolers / The rankings
The best coolers for hunting: interior length, a bear certification, and a drain that works
A hunting cooler is judged on three things no camping cooler is: whether a quarter fits, whether it is legal to leave at a trailhead in bear country, and whether you can drain bloody meltwater without lifting 80 pounds.

What a hunting cooler is judged on
Everything on this site is scored on reported ice retention, warranty term and repairability. Hunting adds three questions that no beach or camping roundup asks.
Does a quarter fit? Quarts tell you volume, not shape, and meat does not pour. Interior length is the number: the RTIC 65 Ultra-Tough publishes 26 inches, the Igloo Polar 120 gives 34.69 inches in the top opening, the Engel 65 gives 23.5 inches and the YETI Tundra 65 gives 23.1. A deer hindquarter boned out will lie flat in 26 inches; bone-in elk quarters go in a 120-quart box or they go in two.
Can you drain it without lifting it? A cooler with 60 lb of meat and ice in it is not getting tipped over a tailgate. RTIC's own description is the standard to want: a screw-in gasketed drain plug “designed to drain when partially open without having to fully remove the plug”, over a channelled and recessed floor. The Igloo Polar 120, by contrast, publishes no gasket and no tie-down slots at all.
Will it be left unattended? That is a certification question, not a marketing one, and it is the next section.
The five, side by side
Bear-resistant certification
If you hunt in a unit with a food-storage order, read the order and not the product page: certification is granted to a specific model, usually with a specific locking method, and “bear-resistant design” in marketing copy is not a certification. Where there is no order, the certification is still a useful proxy for latch and hinge strength — it is a test of the hardware holding shut under abuse, which is the same hardware you will be replacing one day. Latch, gasket and drain-plug replacement covers that job.
Meat care, drains and dry ice
Game meat wants to be cold and dry, and a cooler full of melt is neither. The practical method is to keep meat out of the water: quarters in game bags, laid on a rack or a layer of blocks, with the drain cracked so melt runs out rather than pooling. Loose cubed ice packs around shapes better than a block, but it melts faster and makes more water — block ice vs cubed ice sets out the trade honestly, without the “block lasts twice as long” multiplier nobody has measured.
Dry ice is the tool for a long pack-out, and it is a compatibility question: of the coolers here, OutdoorGearLab lists the Tundra Haul as dry-ice compatible and Engel states that its High Performance rotomolded coolers are too. Igloo publishes no dry-ice rating for the Polar 120, and dry ice in a cooler that is not rated for it can craze the liner or build pressure behind a sealed gasket. Our dry ice in a cooler guide covers the handling and the venting.
Then plan the re-ice. Five and a half measured days is a lab number with the lid shut; a hunting cooler is opened, loaded warm and parked in a truck bed in the sun. Pre-chill it the night before (how to pre-chill a cooler), carry more ice than you think you need, and keep the meltwater out of the meat.

Buyer's guide: shopping a hunting cooler
Buy interior length, not quarts
26 inches takes a boned-out deer quarter flat. Under 24 inches you are cutting to fit the cooler, which is the wrong way round.
Insist on a threaded, gasketed drain
You will drain this cooler more than any other. A plug that drains partially open, over a channelled floor, is worth more on a hunt than half a day of ice.
Check the storage order before the spec sheet
If the unit requires certified bear-resistant storage, only a certified model and its specified locking method qualifies. Two coolers here publish one.
Weigh it empty and then be honest
The Igloo Polar 120 is 18 lb empty and holds 188 cans — the best quarts per dollar on this site — but it carries a one-year term and no gasket. The RTIC 65 is 37.7 lb before anything goes in.
Then budget for ice, not for a bigger cooler
How to keep ice longer in a cooler and best coolers for fishing cover the same meat-and-meltwater problem from the water side.
How we scored this
What we checked before picking
Every pick on this page is built from documents you can open yourself: the maker's published capacity, insulation, dimensions and weight; the warranty term quoted from the maker's own warranty page with the date we read it; the parts catalogue, to confirm the latches, gaskets, plugs, lids and straws can actually be bought; and the third-party ice-retention tests that measured these models (OutdoorGearLab, Outdoor Life, Treeline, Outside, Gear Patrol), credited to the publisher that ran them. Every figure links to where it came from, so you can check the pick before you buy it.
Scores are editorial judgments built from that documented research. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubric and its weights are published.
Corrections & updates

Questions
Frequently asked
What is the best cooler for hunting?
The RTIC 65 QT Ultra-Tough: 26 inches of interior length for a boned-out quarter, 5.5 measured days below 40°F at OutdoorGearLab, a screw-in gasketed drain plug that drains partially open, a 5-year term and latches, gaskets, plugs, handles and feet all sold as parts.
What size cooler do I need for a deer?
A boned-out whitetail fits a 65-quart cooler with ice if the interior is around 26 inches long; bone-in quarters or an elk need a 120-quart box or two 65s. Quarts alone will mislead you — check the published interior length.
Do I need a bear-certified cooler for hunting?
Only where a land manager's food-storage order requires certified storage, in which case only a certified model with its specified locking method counts. Of the coolers here, OutdoorGearLab records the YETI Tundra Haul as IGBC certified and Lifetime states its 55 Quart is certified to withstand a bear for up to an hour.
Can you put dry ice in a hunting cooler?
Only in a cooler rated for it. OutdoorGearLab lists the YETI Tundra Haul as dry-ice compatible and Engel states its High Performance rotomolded coolers are; Igloo publishes no rating for the Polar 120. Read dry ice in a cooler before you buy any.
How do you keep meat cold on a long hunt?
Pre-chill the cooler, keep quarters in game bags above the meltwater on a rack or blocks, crack the drain so melt runs out instead of pooling, and re-ice daily. The cooler's lab figure assumes a shut lid and a cold load, and a hunt gives it neither.
