Soft Coolers / The rankings
The best coolers for kayaking: the closure matters more than the capacity
A kayak cooler gets splashed, strapped down, sat on and occasionally swamped. That rules out most of the soft-cooler market in one spec — the closure — and leaves welded seams, waterproof zippers and roll tops.

Why the closure decides it
Everywhere else on this site, soft coolers are ranked on measured ice days. On a kayak, the ice figure is the second question. A paddling cooler spends its day in standing water: spray off the blade, drips off your arms, whatever came over the bow. A fabric zipper in that environment lets water in, and once meltwater and lake water are mixing, the cold is gone and so is your sandwich.
So the first filter is the seam and the closure. Welded seams — radio-frequency or heat-welded TPU rather than stitched fabric — are the difference between a bag that keeps water out and a bag that wicks. Engel states 100% leak-proof all-welded seams on its HD30; RTIC publishes welded seams plus what it calls an EZ Waterproof Zipper on the Soft Pro. A roll top is the other answer, and arguably the better one, because there is no zipper to grit up with sand: the Engel BP25 and the ICEMULE both close that way.
What to avoid is the ordinary fabric zipper. The RTIC Lightweight Backpack, for instance, is explicitly not designed for loose ice and uses a fabric zipper rather than a waterproof one — fine for a trail, wrong for a boat. Our how to choose a soft cooler guide breaks the closure types down in general.
The five, side by side
Floating, and what that actually means
RTIC states that its 30 Can Ultra-Tough Soft Cooler floats. That is a real feature and it is worth paying for, but be clear about what it buys you: a cooler that floats is a cooler you can retrieve after a capsize, not a cooler that keeps your food dry while it floats. The closure decides the second part.
An empty or part-empty soft cooler floats anyway because of the air in the insulation. Full of cans and ice it is a different object: 30 cans and 18 lb of ice is close to 40 lb, and a 40 lb bag with a litre of trapped air will sit very low or go under. If the cooler genuinely has to survive a swim, tether it and do not count on buoyancy.
Tying it to the boat
The thing most paddlers discover on trip two: a soft cooler has nowhere good to clip to. Daisy-chain webbing, a compression strap or even a sturdy carry handle gives you a hard point for a carabiner; a soft shoulder strap on its own does not, and a strap that works loose under a bungee is how coolers get lost.
The ICEMULE's padded cross-body sling doubles as the tether and it is the one bag here designed to be worn while moving. The Engel BP25's backpack straps do the same job for a portage — both hands stay on the boat, which is the whole point of a backpack cooler on the water. Our backpack cooler ranking covers that format in full, and best backpack coolers for hiking has the loaded-weight arithmetic that applies just as well here.
Size: the deck, not the trip
On land you size a cooler by how many people for how many nights. On a kayak you size it by what fits behind the seat or in the rear well, and that is usually 9 to 25 litres — far smaller than people expect. A 30-can bag is already near the limit of a sit-on-top's tankwell once there is a dry bag in there too.
That is why the 9-litre ICEMULE earns a place despite a 90-day warranty and no measured figure: 10 cans plus ice, a body that rolls flat when empty, and nothing to catch on a paddle. If you are kayak camping rather than day paddling, the Engel HD30 is the one to carry — 41.8 litres and 63 cans measured, 3.0 measured days and all-welded leak-proof seams — but it rides in the hull or on a trailer, not on your lap. Sizing in general is covered in what size soft cooler do I need.

Buyer's guide: a cooler for a kayak
Welded seams or a roll top, nothing else
A stitched seam and a fabric zipper will let water in and wick meltwater out. Both of the terms you are looking for are published by the makers: welded seams, and either a waterproof zipper or a zipperless roll top.
Find the hard point before you buy
Daisy-chain webbing, a compression strap or a rigid handle to clip into. A cooler with no attachment point is a cooler that goes over the side eventually.
Measure the tankwell, not the trip
9 to 25 litres is the realistic band for a day paddle. Anything bigger is a shuttle-vehicle cooler.
Assume one day of ice, not the measured figure
No lab tests a cooler in water. Pre-chill it, use a frozen block or sheet pack rather than loose cubes so there is less meltwater to slosh, and plan a day.
Then check the term, because the water is hard on hardware
Zippers, buckles and straps are what fail on a boat. RTIC gives one year on its Ultra-Tough soft coolers, Engel one year, ICEMULE ninety days. The full set of quoted terms is in the warranty comparison.
How we scored this
What we checked before picking
Every pick on this page is built from documents you can open yourself: the maker's published capacity, insulation, dimensions and weight; the warranty term quoted from the maker's own warranty page with the date we read it; the parts catalogue, to confirm the latches, gaskets, plugs, lids and straws can actually be bought; and the third-party ice-retention tests that measured these models (OutdoorGearLab, Outdoor Life, Treeline, Outside, Gear Patrol), credited to the publisher that ran them. Every figure links to where it came from, so you can check the pick before you buy it.
Scores are editorial judgments built from that documented research. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubric and its weights are published.

Questions
Frequently asked
What is the best cooler for kayaking?
The RTIC Ultra-Tough Soft Cooler Pro 30: welded seams, an EZ Waterproof Zipper, a Cold Lock press lid and an exterior waterproof pocket, in a 30-can body. No lab has published an ice figure for it, which is stated on its card.
Do soft coolers float?
Some do. RTIC states that its 30 Can Ultra-Tough Soft Cooler floats. Any soft cooler floats when empty because of the air in the insulation; loaded with 30 cans and ice it is near 40 lb and will sit very low. Tether it rather than relying on buoyancy.
Is a hard or soft cooler better for a kayak?
Soft, in almost every case: it conforms to the hull, weighs a quarter as much empty and will not crack a deck fitting. The exception is a fish box on a sit-on-top, where a small hard cooler doubles as a seat. The general comparison is in hard cooler vs soft cooler.
What size cooler fits in a kayak?
Usually 9 to 25 litres behind the seat or in the rear tankwell. A 30-can bag is already near the limit once a dry bag is in there. Measure the well before you shop.
How long will ice last in a soft cooler on the water?
Plan on a day. The measured figures — 3.0 days for the Engel HD30, 2.5 for the BP25, 1.8 for the RTIC Soft Pack 30 — come from still-air tests at room temperature, and a cooler losing heat to water loses it faster.
Should I use ice or ice packs in a kayak cooler?
Packs. A sheet or block pack means less meltwater sloshing around in a bag that is already going to get wet from the outside, and it is flatter so it wastes less of a small interior. See best ice packs for coolers.
