One job, ten hours
A lunch cooler leaves the house at six and gets opened at noon. It needs to hold about 40°F for six to ten hours with an ice pack, fit a container and a drink, survive a truck floor and a wash, and not smell by Friday. The tests we cite mostly ignore the category (OutdoorGearLab included one lunchbox, the Carhartt, at 0.8 days below 40°F, and the Yeti Daytrip 9L at 1.2), so this page leans harder than most on construction and warranty. The pattern from the soft-cooler rankings holds: the zipper and the liner are where a lunch bag dies, and the makers that give lunch coolers a term give them 90 days (RTIC) or a year (Igloo, Thermos), with Arctic Zone the outlier at lifetime.

Hard-sided or soft
The soft options split on the closure. The Titan's flip lid and the Carhartt's zippered fabric are opposites: one has no zipper and a lifetime defect term; the other has a zipper, two compartments, a Carhartt label and a warranty page we could not read (carhartt.com blocked fetches). RTIC's Day Packer is a semi-rigid clamshell with an anti-microbial liner, designed around RTIC's own container, and its Lightweight Backpack is the day-hike version; both are 90-day products by RTIC's chart, and both say not to use loose ice. Whatever you buy, the ice pack does the work. Outdoor Life's test put the $8 Igloo MaxCold block at 31°F after four hours on a counter and the RTIC small pack at 37°F; in a closed lunch cooler both last the shift. Best ice packs ranks them.

No zipper if you can help it
Flip lid (Titan) or hard lid (Playmate). Zippers on lunch bags die first.
Ice packs, not ice
A hard block on the bottom; the Igloo MaxCold or Arctic Zone's two-pack, both under $15.
A liner you can wipe
Welded or anti-microbial (RTIC). Rinse and dry it open every night; how to clean a soft cooler.
Read the term
90 days (RTIC), 1 year (Igloo), lifetime (Arctic Zone), unread (Carhartt). Every term, quoted.
Or skip the lunch cooler
A 30 oz tumbler full of ice water and a lunch in a soft cooler you already own does the same job.

Every figure links to where it came from.
