Hard cooler vs soft cooler: the measured numbers, the terms, and which job each does
The same publisher measured both in the same year. Hard coolers held ice two to three times longer and carry terms two to five times longer. Soft coolers weigh a fifth as much. The decision is the job, not the brand.

The numbers, same lab
OutdoorGearLab ran both categories in 2026 with the same thresholds (days below 40°F, food safe; days below 50°F, drinkable). Hard coolers, July 2026 table: from 2.4 days (Coleman Snap 'N Go) to 6.8 (YETI Roadie 48), with the rotomolded 45–65s at 4.1–5.5. Soft coolers, September 2026 table: from 0.8 days (a Carhartt lunchbox) to 3.6 (YETI Hopper M20), with the Engel HD30 at 3.0 and everything else under 2.7. The best soft cooler holds ice about as long as the worst hard cooler; a mid-table hard cooler holds twice what a mid-table soft one does.

The terms
This is where the categories separate most. Every maker on this site gives its hard coolers a longer term than its soft ones: YETI 5 vs 3, RTIC 5 vs 1, Engel 10 vs 1, Igloo 1 vs 1 (a tie at the bottom). Pelican's lifetime applies to its Elite hard coolers. The one inversion is Arctic Zone, which gives its soft goods a limited lifetime term and its rotomolded coolers 5 years. And the terms matter more on soft coolers because there are no parts: a rotomolded cooler with a torn gasket is a $15 order; a soft cooler with a torn liner is a claim or a replacement. Weight, parts and the zipper
Weight is the soft cooler's whole argument and it is a good one: an RTIC 45 is 29.5 lb before ice and a Hopper M20 is 5.6. A hard cooler is carried by two people or rolled; a soft one is worn. For a day at the beach, a tailgate, a boat cockpit or a hike, the soft cooler is the right tool and the hard one is dead weight. Which job
- A weekend or a week: hard. Nothing soft holds ice past day four sealed, let alone opened.
- A day trip, a beach, a game: soft. It weighs nothing and holds what a day needs.

Is a hard cooler or soft cooler better?
For ice and longevity, hard: 4–7 measured days and 5-year to lifetime terms. For carrying, soft: a fifth of the weight. Buy the hard one for the trip and the soft one for the day.
How much longer does a hard cooler keep ice?
Roughly twice as long for comparable mid-range models in OutdoorGearLab's 2026 tables: rotomolded 45s at 4.1–4.6 days vs 30-can soft coolers at 1.8–2.4.
Do soft coolers have worse warranties?
Yes, at every maker but Arctic Zone: YETI 3 vs 5, RTIC 1 vs 5, Engel 1 vs 10. And soft coolers have no replaceable parts.
Can a soft cooler replace a hard cooler for camping?
For drinks, yes. For food over more than one night, no: the best soft cooler measured 3.6 days sealed, and it will be opened.
