Hard Coolers / The rankings
The best rotomolded coolers: five one-piece shells, ranked on ice days, term and parts
Rotomolding buys you a seamless shell and thick foam. It does not automatically buy you the longest ice hold — one injection-molded cooler out-held every rotomolded box in the same lab. Here is what the process is actually worth.

What rotomolding actually buys
Rotational molding tumbles polyethylene powder inside a heated mold until it fuses into a single hollow shell with no seams and no welds. The cavity between the inner and outer walls is then filled with pressure-injected polyurethane foam. Three things follow from that, and only three.
First, there is no joint to split. A rotomolded cooler dropped off a tailgate deforms rather than cracking along a seam, which is why every bear-resistant certification on this site sits on a rotomolded body — YETI's Tundra Haul carries an IGBC certification, and so does Lifetime's polyethylene 55. Second, the wall can be made thick without a seam getting thicker with it: the coolers here carry two to three inches of foam, against the 1.5 inches Igloo puts in its injection-molded Trailmate 50. Third, the shell is stiff enough to carry hardware that can be unbolted and replaced, which is the whole argument of this site.
What rotomolding does not buy is weight. The RTIC 45 Ultra-Tough is 29.5 lb empty by RTIC's own figure and the Pelican 50QT is 32.2 lb; a Tundra 45 is 23 lb by YETI's spec and 29.6 lb on OutdoorGearLab's scale. You are buying a cooler you will lift with two hands for the rest of its life.
The five, side by side
Read the warranty column before the ice column. Four of these five publish a term you can hold them to — five years from RTIC and YETI, ten from Engel, a lifetime guarantee from Pelican, five years on parts and construction from Blue Coolers — and the term is worth 20% of the score on this site's rubric precisely because it is the part of a cooler you cannot inspect in a store.
The catch: it is the foam, not the process
So why buy rotomolded at all? Because the Ultra-Light carries a three-year term instead of five, and RTIC lists latch and gasket kits for the Ultra-Tough line and not for the Ultra-Light. RTIC has drawn the line itself: the process it warrants for five years is the one that survives a truck bed. If you want the ice hours and will accept the shorter term, our ice-retention ranking puts that cooler where it belongs. If you want the shell you stop thinking about, stay on this page.
The same caution applies in the other direction. A rotomolded shell with thin foam is still a rotomolded shell: the Blue Coolers Ice Vault publishes two inches of insulation and a 10-day claim, but no lab has ever measured any Blue cooler, which is why it ranks fifth here despite being the cheapest true rotomolded body with wheels. We say so on the Blue Coolers review as well.
The part that decides the decade
A rotomolded shell rarely fails. Latches, gaskets and drain plugs always do, and the difference between a ten-year cooler and a five-year one is whether you can buy those three things on a Tuesday.
RTIC sells T-latches, gaskets sized per model, drain plugs, rope handles and feet. YETI sells latches, lid gaskets, drain plugs, handles and feet. Engel sells a stainless latch assembly — one lower latch, one upper keeper and four M4 screws — that fits every High Performance rotomolded cooler, plus plugs, feet and handles. Pelican lists stainless hardware and ABS latches on its spec sheet but we could not verify separate parts sales on a fetchable page, and Blue Coolers publishes no parts catalog at all. That ordering is most of this page's ranking. Replacing a latch, gasket or drain plug walks through the job, and every term on this site, quoted and dated is the reference table.

Buyer's guide: how to shop a rotomolded cooler
Ask for the foam number, not the word
“Rotomolded” tells you about the shell. Ask how many inches of foam are in the lid and the walls. RTIC and Engel publish it (2.8 in and a full 2 in respectively); when a brand only says “extreme ice retention”, treat the ice claim as marketing.
Weigh it empty, then add 40 lb
A 45-quart rotomolded cooler is roughly 30 lb empty. Full of ice and cans it is a two-person lift into a truck bed. If that is a problem, read best wheeled coolers before you buy a chest.
Check that the gasket is a part
A compressed gasket is the most common cause of a cooler that stopped holding ice, and it is a ten-dollar fix if the brand sells one. Why a cooler stops holding ice covers the diagnosis.
Pre-chill it or waste the first bag
Thirty pounds of warm plastic and foam has to come down to freezing before the ice does anything for your food. How to pre-chill a cooler is the cheapest hour of this purchase.
Then sanity-check the price against an injection-molded box
Best coolers under $200 and coolers like YETI but cheaper show what the same money buys with a thinner shell and a shorter term.
How we scored this
What we checked before picking
Every pick on this page is built from documents you can open yourself: the maker's published capacity, insulation, dimensions and weight; the warranty term quoted from the maker's own warranty page with the date we read it; the parts catalogue, to confirm the latches, gaskets, plugs, lids and straws can actually be bought; and the third-party ice-retention tests that measured these models (OutdoorGearLab, Outdoor Life, Treeline, Outside, Gear Patrol), credited to the publisher that ran them. Every figure links to where it came from, so you can check the pick before you buy it.
Scores are editorial judgments built from that documented research. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubric and its weights are published.

Questions
Frequently asked
What is the best rotomolded cooler?
The RTIC 45 QT Ultra-Tough: a one-piece rotomolded shell, up to 2.8 inches of closed-cell foam, 4.6 measured days below 40°F at OutdoorGearLab, a 5-year term, and latches, gaskets, plugs, handles and feet all sold as parts. It out-measured the YETI Tundra 45 (4.1 days) on the same bench for substantially less money.
Are rotomolded coolers worth it?
For a cooler that lives in a truck bed or a boat for a decade, yes: the seamless shell has no joint to split and the brands put their longest terms on it — five years from RTIC and YETI, ten from Engel, a lifetime guarantee from Pelican. For a cooler that lives in a garage and goes out six weekends a year, an injection-molded box holds ice nearly as long for a fraction of the price.
Do rotomolded coolers hold ice longer?
Not by themselves. In OutdoorGearLab's 2026 table the injection-molded RTIC 52 QT Ultra-Light measured 5.8 days, longer than every rotomolded cooler in the test, because it carries up to three inches of foam. Ice retention tracks foam thickness and gasket seal; rotomolding tracks impact survival and warranty length.
Which rotomolded cooler has the longest warranty?
Pelican's Elite line is “guaranteed for life” on its own product page — the longest term here. Engel publishes a 10-year limited warranty on its High Performance rotomolded coolers, double YETI's and RTIC's five.
How heavy is a rotomolded cooler?
Around 30 lb empty at 45 quarts: 29.5 lb for the RTIC 45 Ultra-Tough, 23 lb by YETI's spec for the Tundra 45 (29.6 lb on OutdoorGearLab's scale), 32.2 lb for the Pelican 50QT and 43.7 lb for the wheeled Pelican 45QW. The Engel 65 is the outlier at 24 lb for 58 quarts.
Where do these numbers come from?
Ice days are OutdoorGearLab's measurements; capacities, foam thicknesses and weights are quoted from each maker's own page; warranty terms are quoted from the brand's warranty document with the date we read it. Nothing here was tested by us.
