Hard Coolers / Guide

Cooler dimensions and sizes: the outside measurement is the one that has to fit

A 45-quart rotomold is about 26 inches long on the outside and 18 inches long on the inside. That seven-inch difference is the foam, and it is why a cooler that fits your quart requirement will not fit your truck bed.

The typical sizes, and the honest range

There is no standard cooler size, but there is a clear middle. Taking every hard cooler in this site’s registry that publishes an exterior measurement, the longest side lands between 15.9 inches (a 16-quart Igloo Playmate) and 38.3 inches (a 120-quart Igloo Polar), with a median of about 26.8 inches. That median is the one worth carrying around in your head: the cooler most people end up buying, somewhere in the 45-to-65-quart band, is a box a little over two feet long.

One warning before the table. Makers publish these figures in whatever order they like - some as height × width × depth, some as length × width × height, some with no labels at all - so the raw triples below are quoted exactly as published rather than normalized into a single order. Where we compare coolers, we compare the longest exterior side against the longest interior side, which is the one comparison that survives whichever order a maker used.

Exterior and interior figures as published by each maker or authorized retailer; measured quarts from OutdoorGearLab’s 2026 table where it tested the model. “Lost to the walls” is the longest exterior side minus the longest interior side. The Igloo Polar and Latitude interiors are the top of their stepped interiors. Sources are listed at the foot of this page.

What the walls cost you

That last column is the whole reason this page exists, and it splits the category in two.

A rotomolded cooler - one-piece shell, pressure-injected foam between the walls - gives up five to twelve inches of length to its own insulation. Pelican’s 50QT Elite is the extreme case: 30 inches of exterior length for 17.5 inches of interior, which is 12.5 inches of foam and plastic. YETI’s Tundras give up about seven and a half, RTIC’s Ultra-Toughs about seven, Engel’s about six.

A thin-walled injection-molded cooler gives up almost nothing. The Igloo Polar 120 loses 3.6 inches of length, and the little Playmate 2.5. That is the trade: the Polar fits 118 measured quarts into a box 38 inches long, where a rotomold of the same exterior length would hold perhaps 70 - and it holds ice for 4.6 days against a Tundra 65’s 4.8, because quarts of thin-walled volume are cheap and ice hours are not. Whether that is a bargain depends entirely on your trip, which is the argument in best rotomolded coolers.

Which measurement to take before you buy

Three measurements decide whether a cooler is the right size, and only one of them is the quart number on the box.

The space it lives in. Measure the narrowest point, not the widest - a truck bed between the wheel wells, the gap between a boat’s seat pedestals, the width of a chest freezer shelf if you pre-chill in one. Then compare it to the longest exterior side in the table above. Do not measure the open tailgate; measure the enclosed space with the lid able to swing.

The lid clearance. A cooler needs its own height plus most of that height again for the lid to open, which is the measurement people forget under a tonneau cover, a camper shell or a bench seat. If the lid cannot open where the cooler lives, the cooler lives somewhere else.

The interior long side. This is what actually determines whether a tray of burgers, a two-liter bottle on its side or a filleted fish lies flat. The table’s interior column is the figure to check, and it is the one makers are least keen to publish. Where a maker publishes no interior, assume the pattern for its construction: six to eight inches off the long side for a rotomold, three to four for a thin-walled box.

For sizing by trip rather than by inches - how many quarts you need for four people over three nights - what size cooler do I need does that arithmetic, and how many cans fit in a cooler converts quarts to cans with the ice allowed for. This page is the other half: once you know the quarts, these are the inches you have to find room for.

Interior height, the measurement that decides bottles

Height behaves differently from length, because it is the dimension that decides whether anything stands upright. A standard 12 oz long-neck is a little over nine inches; a 22 oz bomber and a 750 ml wine bottle both run around 11.5 to 12 inches. With a layer of ice underneath, a bottle needs more than 13 inches of interior height to stand - and most 45-quart coolers publish 10 to 11.

The coolers that clear 13 inches are the tall, narrow ones rather than the big ones: the Roadie 24 publishes 13.25 inches of interior height in a 20-quart measured volume, and Pelican’s 50QT Elite publishes 13.70. A Tundra 65 is far bigger and publishes 11.1, so bottles lie down in it. We work through that trade on best coolers for beer.

Soft coolers measure differently again

A soft cooler’s exterior shrinks as you empty it and its walls are an inch to an inch and a half of closed-cell foam rather than three inches of injected polyurethane, so the wall tax is smaller but the shape is less predictable. Two published examples from this site’s registry: YETI’s Hopper M20 measures 15.3 × 9.9 × 19.1 inches outside for 11.6 × 8.9 × 14 inside - about 3.7 inches lost on the long side - and the RTIC Ultra-Tough Soft Pro 30 measures 15.75 × 12.49 × 14.02 outside for 12.99 × 8.27 × 10.63 inside.

If the thing that has to fit is a cooler bag rather than a chest, size it by what it carries instead: what size soft cooler do I need works through the can counts, and hard cooler vs soft cooler covers which format you should be measuring in the first place.

One cooler per size band

These four between them cover the useful range, and all four publish an interior measurement, which is why they are the ones we would send you to measure against.

Our picks for this

A cooler for each size band

Picked for published dimensions, not just quarts: each of these four publishes both an exterior and an interior figure, so you can check it against your space before it arrives.

Before you buy

Measure the space first, then shop the quart number, then check the interior long side against the longest thing you intend to lay flat. In that order, nothing arrives that does not fit. The ranked lists are best hard coolers and best small coolers, and if you have already bought one that is too big to pre-chill in a freezer, how to pre-chill a cooler has the workaround.

How we scored this

What we checked before picking

Every pick on this page is built from documents you can open yourself: the maker's published capacity, insulation, dimensions and weight; the warranty term quoted from the maker's own warranty page with the date we read it; the parts catalogue, to confirm the latches, gaskets, plugs, lids and straws can actually be bought; and the third-party ice-retention tests that measured these models (OutdoorGearLab, Outdoor Life, Treeline, Outside, Gear Patrol), credited to the publisher that ran them. Every figure links to where it came from, so you can check the pick before you buy it.

Scores are editorial judgments built from that documented research. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubric and its weights are published.

Corrections & updates

  • First published. Built entirely from exterior and interior figures already sourced in this site's product registry (maker and authorized-retailer pages read 2026-09-21 to 2026-10-03) plus OutdoorGearLab's 2026 measured-volume column; no new sources were needed. The 'lost to the walls' column is the longest published exterior side minus the longest published interior side.

Questions

Frequently asked

What is the average cooler size?

There is no standard, but across the fourteen hard coolers on this site that publish an exterior measurement the median long side is about 26.8 inches, with a range from 15.9 inches (16 quarts) to 38.3 inches (120 quarts). The most commonly bought band, 45 to 65 quarts, measures roughly 24 to 32 inches long, 17 to 20 inches wide and 16 to 20 inches tall.

How big is a 45 quart cooler?

About 26 inches long, 18 inches wide and 16 inches tall on the outside, with roughly 18 to 19 inches of interior length. A YETI Tundra 45 publishes 15.4 × 25.75 × 16.1 in outside and 10.6 × 18.4 × 9.4 in inside; an RTIC Ultra-Tough 45 publishes 26.35 × 18.19 × 15.75 in outside and 18.90 × 11.42 × 10.98 in inside. Measured usable volume is 35 quarts for the YETI and 43 for the RTIC.

How big is a 65 quart cooler?

Roughly 30 to 32 inches long, 17 to 18 inches wide and 17 inches tall. A YETI Tundra 65 publishes 16 × 30.6 × 17.25 in with an 11.1-inch interior height; an RTIC Ultra-Tough 65 publishes 31.62 × 17.5 × 17 in with a 26-inch interior length. Expect 56 and 64 measured quarts respectively.

Why is the inside of my cooler so much smaller than the outside?

Because the walls are the product. A rotomolded cooler carries two to three inches of injected foam per side, which costs five to twelve inches of exterior length: Pelican’s 50QT Elite is 30 inches long outside and 17.5 inches inside. A thin-walled injection-molded cooler like the Igloo Polar 120 loses only 3.6 inches, which is why it holds 118 quarts in a 38-inch box - and why it holds ice for days rather than a week.

What size cooler fits in a truck bed between the wheel wells?

Measure your own bed at its narrowest point, because the gap varies by make, model and bed length. Then compare it to the longest exterior side in the chart above: coolers on this site run from 15.9 to 38.3 inches, so almost every bed has a cooler that fits crosswise if you are willing to go narrow and tall rather than long and low. Allow for the lid to open under a tonneau cover or camper shell.

Do makers publish interior dimensions?

Some do and some do not, which is one of the more annoying gaps in this category. YETI, RTIC, Pelican, Engel and Igloo publish interiors for most models; Coleman, Lifetime and Ninja largely do not - Ninja publishes an exterior for the FrostVault 50 but no interior at all, as noted in our Ninja FrostVault review. Where there is no published interior, subtract six to eight inches from the long side for a rotomold and three to four for a thin-walled box.
