Sand first
A loaded 45-quart cooler is 75–85 lb. On pavement, any wheel moves it. On dry sand, a wheel narrower than about four inches sinks and the cooler becomes a sled. That single fact reorders the wheeled-cooler rankings for the beach: the Roadie 48, which leads the wheeled ranking on measured ice, rolls on solid wheels sized for gravel, and the Igloo Trailmate Journey 70, which has no measured ice figure and a 1-year term, has the wide all-terrain wheels, the umbrella holders and the butler tray that make it a beach cart. Neither is wrong. They are different jobs.

Salt and hardware
The beach also punishes ice retention in a way no lab does: the lid opens constantly, the cooler sits on hot sand, and the sun hits it all day. A cooler that measured five days sealed indoors is a one-day cooler on a beach, and the difference between the best and worst on this page is smaller than the difference between shade and no shade. The Coleman is here as the honest budget pick: 4.7 measured days at OutdoorGearLab, 13.8 lb, $85, and a warranty term we could not read. For a cooler that will fill with sand and ride in a trunk, that trade can be right; best coolers for the money lays out the per-year math.

Buyer's guide: the beach cooler that comes back next summer
Wheels wider than four inches, or no wheels
Big soft wheels roll on sand; small hard wheels do not. If the walk from the lot is short, a 20–30 quart carry cooler (Roadie 24, Pelican 30QT) is lighter to carry than a wheeled 45 is to drag.
Two coolers beat one
A soft cooler for drinks that gets opened, a hard cooler for food that stays shut. The food cooler holds ice all day.
Rinse it
Fresh water over hinges, latches, drain plug and axle the same day. Salt in a drain-plug thread is how a plug gets stripped; plug replacement covers the fix.
Read the term for a cooler that lives in a trunk

What is the best cooler for the beach?
For soft sand, the Igloo Trailmate Journey 70 (oversized all-terrain wheels, umbrella holders, tray). For hard sand and boardwalks, the YETI Roadie 48 (6.8 measured days, 5-year term). For a short carry, the Roadie 24.
Do Yeti cooler wheels work on sand?
On hard-packed sand, yes; on dry soft sand, the Roadie and Tundra Haul's solid wheels dig in. A wide-wheel cart cooler is the sand answer.
Does salt water damage a cooler?
It corrodes metal hinge pins, axles and plug threads. Pelican publishes stainless hardware; rubber latches and rope handles have nothing to rust. Rinse with fresh water after every beach day.
How long will a cooler keep ice at the beach?
A day, for most, with the lid opening constantly in full sun; the measured five-day figures are sealed, indoor tests. Shade and a separate drinks cooler are worth more than the cooler choice.
