Gifts / Gift guide
The best cooler gifts: five coolers at five prices, and what to put inside so the box is not empty
A cooler is a good gift and an empty cooler is an odd one. Five coolers from $34 to $275, each with a test result or a warranty term to justify it, and three ice packs from $8 to $25 that turn the box into a package.

Which cooler to give
A cooler gift fails two ways: it is the wrong size for the recipient's life, or it is a $30 cooler dressed as a $300 one. The five here are chosen so that each price has a reason. At $120, the Igloo Trailmate 50 has the best measured result on this page: Outdoor Life packed it one-third full of ice at 60–70°F and it held for 122 hours, which beat the Yeti Roadie 48 (115 hours) and the Pelican 45QW (115 hours) in the same test. Its weakness is the 1-year term, so it is the gift for someone who wants a cooler that works, not one that outlives them. At $239, the RTIC 45 is the rotomolded cooler with a 5-year term and a parts page (latches $14.99, gasket $17.99, plugs $11.99), the gift for the person who keeps things. At $275, the Roadie 24 is the Yeti for people for whom the name is part of the present. At $70 the Titan Deep Freeze 30 is a soft cooler with a limited lifetime term and 2.1 measured days, and at $34 the Playmate Elite is a lunch cooler that fits under a tree.

What to put in it
An empty cooler under the tree reads as a box. Three things fix that, all of them useful. Two Igloo MaxCold Large Freeze Blocks ($7.99 each on Igloo's page; 5°F out of the freezer and Outdoor Life's Best Overall) go on the floor of a 45- to 50-quart cooler and are the packs the recipient will actually use. A Yeti Thin Ice Large ($25) is the upgrade for the RTIC or the Roadie: the coldest start in the test (-5°F) in a hard shell with a 5-year term. An Engel 5 lb 32°F pack ($19.99) is for the produce cooler or the lunch bag: it holds at freezing, so the lettuce does not. Add a printed copy of how to keep ice longer if you want to be that person; the pre-chill step is the one most people skip. Best ice packs ranks all six.

- Zipperless flip lid removes the most common failure point
- 2.1 measured days beats the RTIC Soft Pack and Hopper Flip 12

Buyer's guide: a cooler someone will use
Match the size to the car
A 50-quart Trailmate is 25.7 inches wide; a Roadie 24 is 16.5. Measure the trunk or the back seat if you can.
Wheels for anyone over 50 or under 12
RTIC rates its 45 at 41 lb of ice and 29.5 lb empty: 70 lb full. The Trailmate wheels; the RTIC 45 and Roadie 24 do not.
Term equals lifespan
1 year (Igloo), 5 years (RTIC, Yeti), lifetime (Titan). Pay for the term if the recipient keeps things.
Color matters more than you think
People choose coolers by color, and a cooler is not hidden. Check what is already in the garage before picking one.
Put something in it
Two ice packs, a bottle opener, a dry bag. The cooler stops being a box.
How we scored this
Units we claim to have tested: 0
Plenty of sites say they filled every cooler on this list with ice and watched it for a week. We don't say that, and we say so on every page. What we do instead: read the maker's published capacity, insulation, dimensions and weight; quote the warranty term from the maker's own warranty page with the date we read it; check whether the latches, gaskets, plugs, lids and straws are sold as parts; and cite the third-party ice-retention tests (OutdoorGearLab, Outdoor Life, Treeline, Outside, Gear Patrol) as their measurements, never ours. Every figure links to where it came from.
Scores are editorial judgments from that documented research, not lab results. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubric and its weights are published.

What do you put in a cooler for a gift?
